'I almost always play it in hiding, alone': can anyone get into free jazz, history's most maligned music?

🎵 free jazz can be super challenging to get into but if you do it's like a whole new world of sound opens up 🌐 i recently listened to joe mcphees tenor and it was like someone was speaking directly to my soul 💭 matthews coleys writing in the new book "now jazz now" is super helpful in breaking down the genre and its history 👍 the best way to approach free jazz is to start with some of the more accessible stuff and then branch out from there 🌱

omg u gotta check out this new book about free jazz 📚 it's like a gateway to understanding the genre, even if it can be super challenging at first... i mean, sonic youth played with the ny art quartet and released some awesome albums on ecstatic peace! label... but what i love about this project is that it's not just about the music itself, but also about exploring the history and context behind it. like, joe mcphees tenor is a total game changer 🎸 - it's like your emotions are speaking to you through the sounds... anyway, if u're new to free jazz, start with that & then maybe dive into some peter brötzmann 😅

I've always found free jazz to be a bit of an acquired taste 😐. The level of improvisation can be overwhelming at first, but once you get into it, it's like a wild rollercoaster ride of emotions 🎠. I mean, some pieces are so beautiful and relaxing, while others can be super complex and even painful to listen to 🤯. But that's what makes it so fascinating, right? The fact that it challenges our expectations and pushes the boundaries of traditional music is really inspiring 💥.

I'm loving this new book "Now Jazz Now" though - it's like having a roadmap to exploring all these different records and artists 🗺️. And I totally agree with Thurston Moore on the importance of research and exploration in discovering free jazz 📚. It's not something you can just jump into without putting in the time and effort, but trust me, it's worth it 😊.

For anyone looking to dip their toes into free jazz, I'd say start with Joe McPhee's "Tenor" - it's a great gateway piece that shows off the genre's emotional range 🎵. And of course, Peter Brötzmann's "Machine Gun" is a classic that you can't miss 🔥.

OMG 🤯 I was listening to some free jazz the other day & I gotta say its really deep 🤫 u guys think its just noise but its like therapy for ur mind lol 😂 Its all about experimentin & pushin boundaries, thats what makes it so liberatin! 💥 Thurston Moore is right tho, u gotta dig in & research to understand its beauty 📚 I mean Joe McPhee's Tenor is like a whole mood, u feel me? 🎶 & Neneh Cherry's foreword on this new book "Now Jazz Now" is EVERYTHING 😍 They're tryin to introduce us to this amazing world & I'm all in 👍

🎵 I'm all about that retro vibes, you know? Free jazz is like the ultimate underdog story - it's all about breaking free from the norms and embracing the chaos 😂. And Thurston Moore's journey into this world is like a dream come true - who wouldn't want to explore the uncharted territories of sound with their buddy Byron Coley? 🤜🤛

But what I love most about free jazz is its raw emotionality - it's like the music speaks straight to your soul, you feel me? 😊 Whether it's Joe McPhee's Tenor or Peter Brötzmann's Machine Gun, there's something about these records that just transports you to another dimension 🌌.

And can we talk about how cool it is that this genre has its own label, Ecstatic Peace!? 🤯 It's like a underground movement within the music scene - and I am HERE. FOR. IT 💥

I'm obsessed with this Thurston Moore project, you know? 🤯 It's like he's giving us permission to dive into the unknown and explore all this crazy free jazz stuff 😅. And honestly, it's kinda beautiful when it's played low and chill, but then there are these other tracks that just throw you off a cliff... in a good way? Like, have you listened to Joe McPhee's Tenor yet? It's like an emotional rollercoaster 🎠! Anyway, I'm thinking of starting a playlist for when I need some focus or relaxation... any recs? 💡
