Hundreds march in silence to honor victims of Swiss bar fire that left 40 dead

Hundreds of mourners gathered in silence on Sunday to pay their respects to the 40 people who lost their lives in a devastating fire at a bar in the Swiss Alps, which occurred during New Year's celebrations. The somber procession wound its way up the hill to Le Constellation bar, where many had been celebrating before the tragedy struck.

As the crowd marched through the streets, some wept openly, while others clutched flower bouquets and other tributes. At the makeshift memorial piled with flowers, cuddly toys, and other tokens of remembrance, mourners broke into sustained applause as more people arrived to pay their respects. The outpouring of grief was a testament to the strong bond between the community and its young residents.

"We went there to party," said Cathy Premer, whose 17-year-old daughter was celebrating her birthday when she called in frantic because Le Constellation bar was cordoned off due to the fire. Premer's words captured the sense of inexplicable tragedy that had struck this festive destination for New Year's Eve revelers.

Paola Ponti Greppi, an 80-year-old Italian who lives in Crans-Montana, called for greater safety checks in bars. "We need more safety in these places," she said. Her words echoed concerns from many about how the tragedy could have been prevented.

At a Mass held at the local chapel, Rev. Gilles Cavin spoke of the "terrible uncertainty" that families faced as they awaited news of their loved ones. The service was attended by hundreds of mourners who listened intently as speakers delivered readings in German, French, and Italian.

Forty people died, with 119 injured, and many were in their teens to mid-20s. Authorities had not yet identified all the victims but said they would release more information as it became available. DNA samples played a crucial role in identifying some of the victims.

One victim's mother, Laetitia Brodard, spoke out about her desperate search for her 16-year-old son Arthur, who was at the bar when the fire broke out. "Our Arthur has now left to party in paradise," she said, expressing relief that he had been spared. Her words were a message of hope and resilience from those affected by the tragedy.

The investigation into the bar's management is ongoing, with prosecutors suspecting involuntary homicide, bodily harm, and causing a fire. The case highlights concerns about safety measures at crowded establishments like Le Constellation bar. Swiss President Guy Parmelin announced a national day of mourning for the victims on January 9.

πŸ˜” Oh man, this is so sad... I mean, I know the community was celebrating New Year's Eve, but still, 40 people losing their lives is just... 🀯 How could something like that happen? I'm reading some comments online saying it's a tragedy of humanity, and I'm like, yeah, exactly! 😒 I don't think it's about blaming anyone, it's more about making sure this doesn't happen again. We need to talk about safety measures in bars, duh! πŸ™„ Like Paola Ponti Greppi said, we definitely need better checks in place. And what's with the investigation? Shouldn't they have had fire alarms and stuff set up already?! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I'm not saying anyone was negligent or anything, but come on, people! We gotta learn from this and be more careful next time... 🀞

I'm really shaken by this tragedy 😩. It's just not right that something so senseless has to happen to innocent people, especially young ones πŸ€•. Safety checks in bars should be taken super seriously - like Paola said, it's a matter of life and death πŸ’€. I can only imagine how devastated Cathy Premer must've felt when she found out her daughter was at the bar during that horrific night 😭.

The fact that many were there to celebrate New Year's Eve just makes it even more heart-wrenching πŸŽ‰πŸ˜’. And the way Rev. Gilles Cavin spoke about uncertainty - I can only imagine how hard it must've been for everyone waiting for news about their loved ones πŸ˜”.

We need to make sure something like this never happens again πŸ’ͺ. Better safety measures, better protocols in place... we gotta be more careful 🀝. And to the families who lost loved ones, my heart goes out to you - may they find peace and solace soon ❀️.

πŸ’”πŸ˜’ This is such a devastating tragedy... my heart goes out to the families of the young people who lost their lives. The fact that it was supposed to be a celebratory event just makes it even more heartbreaking πŸŽ‰πŸ˜ I hope they're able to find some sense of justice and peace in the coming days πŸ’ͺ. And wow, 119 injured? That's just awful... can you imagine being trapped in that fire with no way out 😱. The safety checks Paola Ponti Greppi mentioned are so important - bars need to be held accountable for their safety measures πŸ™„. Anyway, I'm sending all my thoughts and positive vibes to the people of Switzerland during this tough time πŸ’•πŸŒŸ

I FEEL SO BAD FOR THE FAMILIES OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LOVED ONES AT THAT BAR!!! IT'S JUST UNBELIEVABLE THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN DURING NEW YEAR'S CELEBRATIONS - THE HAPPIEST TIME OF THE YEAR!!! πŸ€•πŸ’”

I THINK IT'S HIGH TIME WE TAKE SAFETY MEASURES MORE SERIOUSLY IN CROWDED ESTABLISHMENTS LIKE BARS AND NIGHTCLUBS. 80-YEAR-OLD PAOLA PONTI GREPPI IS RIGHT ON THE MONEY WITH HER CALL FOR GREATER SAFETY CHECKS!!! πŸ™Œ

AND I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I'M SO GRATEFUL THAT ARTHUR'S MOM WAS ABLE TO FIND HIM SAFE AND SOUND AFTER SHE WAS DESPERATELY SEARCHING FOR HIM!!! IT'S A TESTAMENT TO HOW FAST THE POLICE CAN WORK IN EMERGENCIES!!! πŸ’ͺ

ANYWAY, I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I'M PRAYING FOR ALL THE VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES, AND I HOPE THAT THE INVESTIGATION INTO THIS TRAGEDY BRINGS SOME MEANINGFUL CHANGES TO PREVENT SUCH DISASTERS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN!!! πŸ•ŠοΈ

πŸ˜”πŸ’” This New Year's tragedy is just devastating. I mean, what can you do when tragedy strikes? It's heartbreaking to see so many young lives lost at such a young age. The crowd at the memorial seemed like they all knew each other, that sense of community is really strong here. But, like Paola said, we need more safety checks in places like bars. Can't stress enough how important that is. πŸ™πŸ’€ And it's not just about the bar itself, but also the people behind the scenes who might have overlooked some crucial details. Investigation is ongoing, let's hope justice is served soon. πŸ’ͺπŸ˜•

πŸ€• this is so heartbreaking πŸ™ 40 young lives lost in such a senseless tragedy ... it's just not fair πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ i mean, who expects to lose their loved one in a fire at a party? 😱 and what really gets me is that the victim's mom just expressed relief that her son was spared 🀝 but what about all the others who didn't make it? πŸ’” i hope they catch whoever was responsible for this heinous crime πŸ’― we need to make sure that something like this never happens again πŸ”₯

πŸ€” This whole thing is just so tragic πŸš‘ and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it... how could this have happened? πŸ’€ 40 people, including teens, lost their lives in a fire that could've been prevented with better safety measures πŸ›‘οΈ. The fact that there were so many victims is mind-boggling, especially since the bar was meant to be a fun and lively spot for New Year's celebrations πŸŽ‰. I'm not sure what kind of investigation will reveal, but it's clear that something went horribly wrong here... can we get some more info on the safety checks in place (or lack thereof) at Le Constellation bar? πŸ’‘

😱 just can't even think about this one... so many people lost their lives in such a senseless tragedy πŸ€• it's heartbreaking to imagine those 40 young lives cut short, celebrating New Year's Eve with friends and family... no way should anyone have to go through that πŸ’” the fact that there were warnings of safety checks needed is just infuriating 😑 how could that not be taken seriously?! πŸ™„ at least now we're seeing some action from authorities, but it's too little, too late for those who won't be coming back... 🀞 my heart goes out to Laetitia and all the families affected by this disaster πŸ’•

πŸŒ«οΈπŸ’” So somber πŸ€• this is just devastating 😩 thinkin' about all those young people who lost their lives 🀯 in that tragic fire πŸ’€. The outpouring of grief here is really powerful πŸ’ͺ it's clear the community is still reeling from the loss ❀️.

I'm with Paola Ponti Greppi on this one πŸ‘ safety checks in bars are a must πŸ”’ we can't keep relying on people to just be careful or something πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. It's not just about the young people who lost their lives, it's also about the families and loved ones who are still searching for answers 🌈.

The way Laetitia Brodard spoke about her son Arthur is just heartbreaking ❀️ I can only imagine how hard it must be for her to find closure πŸ€”. At least she got a message of hope from his words πŸ’•.

I think it's great that the Swiss President announced a national day of mourning πŸ™ but we need more concrete actions taken on safety measures ASAP ⏰ no more excuses, let's get this sorted out πŸ”§πŸ’―

🌫️ I'm still trying to wrap my head around this tragic event in Switzerland πŸ‡¨πŸ‡. The scale of the devastation is just heartbreaking, with so many young lives lost πŸ’”. It's not surprising that the community has come together to support each other and pay their respects in such a powerful way.

The fact that there are now calls for greater safety checks in bars is a wake-up call 🚨. I hope the authorities take these concerns seriously and implement some serious changes, especially when it comes to crowded establishments like Le Constellation bar.

It's also worth noting how technology played a role in identifying some of the victims through DNA samples πŸ’‘. It's amazing what advancements in science can do in helping us piece together what happened and bring justice to those affected.

But amidst all this grief and uncertainty, there are messages of hope and resilience that give me chills 😊. Like Laetitia Brodard's words about her son Arthur being spared... it's a testament to the human spirit and its ability to heal and move forward in the face of tragedy πŸ’•.

Anyway, I'm just glad we can be here to process this and support each other as we navigate these difficult times 🀝.

Just got outta this somber procession in Crans-Montana... it's been really tough to see so many young lives lost. You can't even imagine what Cathy Premer is going through with her daughter celebrating birthday, only to get the news that she was trapped in that inferno 🀯. And Paola Ponti Greppi makes some valid points about safety checks - we need to make sure these places are safer for everyone, especially at festivals and parties when people let their guard down πŸ’”.

It's heartbreaking that Rev. Gilles Cavin had to deliver a Mass to hundreds of mourners who were waiting for news... the uncertainty must've been unbearable 😒. And Laetitia Brodard's message of hope is so inspiring - it's all about holding on to love and resilience during these dark times ❀️.

The authorities are still investigating, but it's clear that this tragedy could have been prevented with better safety measures in place 🚨. I just hope they get to the bottom of it and bring some justice to the families of the victims πŸ’―.

πŸ€• this is just heartbreaking... 40 people lost their lives in one night... it's like, what can you even do? πŸ™„ i mean, i know ppl were partying and all, but that doesn't mean u gotta risk ur life... especially when there are measures in place to prevent such tragedies... safety checks, fire alarms, the works... πŸš’ it just goes to show how quickly things can go wrong in a crowded space like that... and now ppl r grieving and trying to come to terms with what happened... πŸ’” laetitia's words about her son Arthur are really powerful, though... hope and resilience... it's amazing how ppl can find strength in each other during times like these... πŸ€—

🌫️ just can't believe what happened... so many lives lost in one moment πŸ€• and it's all because of a fire πŸš’ that could've been prevented if there were better safety checks in place πŸ’‘ like Paola Ponti Greppi said πŸ™. it's just heartbreaking for the families and loved ones left behind πŸ˜”

I'm still thinking about this thing that happened in Switzerland... πŸ€” I mean, can you even imagine if something like this were to happen in your hometown? πŸŒ† It's crazy how one wrong move at a bar can lead to so many lives lost and injured... 😱 The fact that some of the victims were just celebrating their birthdays or New Year's Eve is just heartbreaking. πŸ’” I also heard Paola Ponti Greppi say something about safety checks, and it made me think... shouldn't bars have security measures in place anyway? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I mean, they're public places where people are going to be drinking and dancing around, right? πŸ˜‚ It's just one of those things that makes you go "wait, why didn't someone see this coming?" πŸ•°οΈ Anyway, my thoughts are still with the families and loved ones who lost their people... πŸ’—

πŸ€• This tragedy is just heartbreaking, especially when you think about all those young lives lost in an instant. I mean, 40 people, mostly under the age of 30, went to have a fun night out and ended up paying the ultimate price. It's just not fair πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. The fact that some people were even discussing safety checks before the incident is a bit too little, too late, don't you think? 🚧 We need stricter regulations in place for these types of venues to prevent something like this from happening again.

I'm also glad to see how the community has come together to support each other and mourn their losses πŸ’”. The outpouring of grief is a testament to the strong bonds between the residents and their loved ones. It's moments like these that remind us of what truly matters in life ❀️. Let's hope the investigation into this incident leads to some real change and increased safety measures for everyone πŸ•ŠοΈ.
