Halloween Weekend Was One of the Weirdest Ever at the Box Office

Halloween Weekend's Baffling Box Office Performance Leaves Industry Reeling

The Halloween weekend, traditionally a hotbed of movie releases, proved to be one of the most underwhelming in recent history. A staggering absence of new films from major studios resulted in a top 10 box office list that defied logic.

At the very bottom of the heap was the $8 million haul by Black Phone 2 and Regretting You, two movies struggling to stay afloat on their third and second weeks, respectively. It's hard not to wonder if this bleak performance is a tacit endorsement for streaming services over big-screen releases.

But what really raised eyebrows was the proliferation of animated films in the top 10. Chainsaw Man: The Movie took a well-deserved bow at #3, while Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters – the surprise box office hit from weeks ago – limped along to a paltry $5 million. Meanwhile, a film most people had never heard of, Stitch Head, took the less-than-desirable 9th spot.

As one might expect, traditional Hollywood fare fared little better. The excellent Bugonia scraped by at #5, while Bruce Springsteen's biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere and Keanu Reeves' comedy Good Fortune meandered to #7 and #8 respectively. Even the long-anticipated re-release of Back to the Future, a beloved 40-year-old classic, couldn't muster more than $4.7 million – half the amount made by last year's Venom 3 in its second weekend alone.

One theory is that Halloween falling on a Friday, combined with a major sporting event and other factors, kept people at home rather than at the cinema. However, this still doesn't explain why studios seemed to have lost all interest in releasing new films over the holiday period.

All things considered, Halloween weekend was an unmitigated disaster for the box office, marking the lowest-grossing weekend of 2025 thus far and cementing its place as one of the worst Octobers since 1997.

OMG, like seriously? 😱 This Halloween weekend's box office performance is literally mind-blowing... or should I say, underwhelming? 🤔 The lack of new films from major studios is just wild, and the fact that animated films are dominating the top 10 is a total head-scratcher. Chainsaw Man: The Movie taking #3 is cool and all, but what's up with Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters limping along for like $5 million? 🤑 It's def not good for traditional Hollywood fare either... Bugonia scraping by at #5 and Bruce Springsteen's biopic meandering to #7? 😴 That's just sad. I think the whole thing is just because people were, like, stuck at home watching sports or whatever, but it doesn't explain why studios dropped the ball this year. Halloween weekend needs to bring its A-game next year, stat! 💥

I think this is a major wake-up call for the movie industry 📚🎥. I mean, $8 million for Black Phone 2? That's crazy low! And what's up with all these animated films taking over the box office? It just goes to show that people are not flocking to cinemas like they used to. Theaters need to adapt and get creative or risk losing out to streaming services 📺. Maybe it's time for them to start showing more diverse content, or even just having less superhero movies 🤔. I'm also a bit curious about the whole Halloween thing, is it really that boring now? Maybe studios are just not feeling the vibe?

I gotta say, I'm kinda loving this whole "streaming services over big-screen releases" vibe 🤑. I mean, think about it, we're living in a time where you can watch a sick animated movie or a biopic on your couch for like $5 or less, and you still get to experience the full cinematic treatment. And don't even get me started on how convenient it is to binge-watch entire seasons of your favorite shows without having to worry about the hassle of getting to the movies 🍿👀.

And yeah, maybe some people are just staying home because of that Friday release and sporting event thingy 🏈, but come on, studios need to adapt to the times. Maybe instead of releasing new films over Halloween weekend, they could be focusing on creating more exclusive content for streaming services? It's like they're not even trying to innovate anymore 🤷‍♂️.

I mean, I'm no expert or anything, but it just seems to me that the future of cinema is all about convenience and accessibility. And honestly, I am HERE. FOR. IT 👊

I'm so confused about this Halloween box office performance 🤔😴. Like, I love a good animated film as much as the next guy, but Chainsaw Man: The Movie and KPop Demon Hunters? That's some weird stuff... 🎥💀. And what's up with the lack of new movies from big studios? It's like they're just phoning it in this year 😴👎. I'm still waiting to see how streaming services do, but I hope they can step up their game and bring some excitement back to the box office 💪🏽📺. Deliver Me From Nowhere is a film I've been wanting to check out though... 🎬👍

omg u think its crazy that there werent even like 1 major movie released over halloween?? i mean what r studios even doin?? it makes sence why ppl are optin for streamin over cinemas rn chainsaw man: the movie tho 🤣 and back to the future lol @ $4.7m who woulda thought that classic wouldnt be enough 2 bring in the dough u gotta wonder wut kinda plan these studios had in store 🤑

idk man, is it weird that people actually watched chainsaw man: the movie like 3 times on imdb? 🤔 meanwhile, stitch head is a total flop and i'm surprised anyone even cares about it 😂 but seriously, who thought releasing bugonia in october was a good idea? 🎥 its probably just the perfect excuse for studios to skip halloween releases altogether... or maybe we're all just getting too used to streaming and can't be bothered with theaters anymore? 🤷‍♂️

I'm like totally stoked to see what's going on with the box office right now 🤔. I mean, $8 million for Black Phone 2? That's just crazy talk! And don't even get me started on the fact that a movie called Stitch Head came out and managed to tank at #9 😂. It's like studios are just phoning it in this Halloween weekend.

I think the whole thing is a bit of a mystery, to be honest. Is it because people were too busy watching sports or whatever? 🏈 Or is there something more going on that we don't know about? Maybe streaming services are just getting better and better at making movies that actually attract audiences?

Whatever it is, I'm not complaining. I love a good movie night at home with the fam, and if that's what everyone wants to do, then so be it 👍. But still, it's weird to see major studios pulling out of the Halloween weekend like that. It's def a black eye for the industry 🤕.

this is what i'm talking about 🤕 the halloween weekend was a total fail, like, literally no new movies from big studios and the ones that did release are straight trash 🚮 chainsaw man: the movie should've done better, but i guess people just aren't interested in anime flicks anymore 🎥 meanwhile, back to the future made like 4.7 million on its re-release, lol what's up with that? 💸 and of course, keanu reeves' comedy is gonna tank... no surprise there 😴

I mean, come on... what's going on with these studios?! One day they're like "oh, Halloween is a great time to release a new movie" and the next it's like they just phoned it in 🤦‍♂️. I get it, maybe people are at home watching Netflix or whatever, but can't we still expect some decent movies from them? Chainsaw Man: The Movie might be cool and all, but it's not exactly what I'm in the mood for when I'm planning a Halloween movie night 🎃. And don't even get me started on that Bruce Springsteen biopic... who thought that was a good idea?! 😂

I gotta say, this Halloween weekend's box office performance is totally whack 💥🎃️. I mean, a top 10 list with all these animated flicks? It's like they forgot about the big-budget movies 🤦‍♂️. Chainsaw Man: The Movie at #3 and KPop Demon Hunters limping along to $5 million? Not exactly what you call a box office smash 🎬. And don't even get me started on Back to the Future re-release making only $4.7 million – that's like, peanuts 🐜. I think the studios need to rethink their strategy for Halloween weekend releases. Maybe they should focus on something other than relying on streaming services to make a buck 💸. All things considered, this Halloween weekend is straight-up flop 😒.

omg what's going on with movies lately? like i saw back to future last year and it was so good but now its not even doing well 🤔 i wonder if people just dont wanna go to the cinema anymore 🍿 maybe they all just have a movie night at home instead? or are there just no good movies coming out anymore?

🎃📊 The numbers are crazy! 🤯 I made a little diagram to try and make sense of it all 😅

I think it's clear that something is up with the studios and their release schedules 🤔. Maybe they just need to get back into the swing of things? 🎬 The animation films are doing well, so maybe we'll see more of those in the future? 🐻 And what's going on with streaming services... is it the answer to a better way to watch movies? 📺

🤔 I'm so done with these studios just phoning it in. You got a major holiday weekend, the perfect opportunity to drop some blockbuster movies... but nope, they're just sitting on the shelf. Meanwhile, Netflix is over here raking it in with their own content. It's like they're trying to prove that streaming is where it's at now. And don't even get me started on the animated films in the top 10 - Chainsaw Man: The Movie? Really? 🤷‍♀️ At least Bugonia was decent, but still, $5 million for a biopic about who knows what? It just doesn't add up to me...

It's pretty crazy to see how the big studios just completely dropped the ball on Halloween weekend 🤔. I mean, you'd think that releasing some solid movies during a traditionally busy period like this would be a no-brainer, but it seems they chickened out 🐓. The fact that only one major release made it into the top 10 is wild, especially considering how many animated films were in there 🤪.

It's almost as if people are just opting for streaming services now instead of going to the cinema 📺. And yeah, Halloween falling on a Friday might've played a role, but that still doesn't excuse not having any decent new movies out 🎬. The whole thing is just confusing and I'm left wondering what went wrong... 💥

🤕 Can't believe it's happened again... 😩 Box office is a joke right now! Even Halloween weekend, which usually gets some decent movie releases, was a total snooze fest 📺 I mean who thought chainsaw man in the movies would be a hit? 🤷‍♂️ And what's with all these animated flicks taking over? It's like everyone's lost their love for live-action films 🎥. And don't even get me started on the lack of big-name releases 🚫. I'm so tired of this industry playing it safe instead of taking risks 💸. What happened to the good old days when you could count on some decent movies coming out during holidays? 🤦‍♂️ Now it's all just streaming services and re-releases... what a mess! 😩

Ugh, what's going on with studios these days? 🤯 They just dropped a huge slate of new films over Halloween weekend, but most of them tanked! I mean, come on, who releases an animated film like Chainsaw Man: The Movie and expects it to be a hit? And Netflix getting in on the action with KPop Demon Hunters doesn't help either... 🙄 It's like people just aren't going to the movies anymore. A $8 million haul for Black Phone 2 and Regretting You is basically a loss at this point, and you're telling me that's "stable"? 😂 And poor Stitch Head getting stuck at 9th place? What even is the logic behind some of these releases?! 🤔

I'm like totally stumped by this box office performance 🤔. I mean, we've seen some weird things happen before, but this is on a whole other level. $8 million for two movies that are struggling to stay afloat? It's not even close to what you'd expect from a major studio release. And those animated films just... show up 🎥👀. I think the streaming services thing is definitely a factor, but it can't be the only reason. I mean, we're talking about some big-name studios here. They must have had something planned, right? The whole thing just feels like a weird anomaly ⚖️.
