Google is bringing its AI-powered Inbox features to Gmail, making them more integral and useful for users. The company has announced several new AI-driven features that will enhance the email experience.
One of these features is AI Overviews, which provides a summary of email chains in search results. This feature allows users to enter natural language searches and receive a response from Google's Gemini AI system. For example, if you search for "past plumbing quote," Gmail would show an AI-generated answer that includes relevant information and cites the corresponding emails.
Another new feature is a proofreading tool called AI Proofread, which will offer suggestions to streamline and clarify writing in emails. This tool uses Google's largest and most powerful Gemini 3 models, allowing it to make more nuanced changes than standard spellchecking features.
Additionally, Gmail is introducing an "AI Inbox" that looks at unread mail and creates an interactive list with priorities and a "Catch me up" section for less important messages. The AI Inbox will be optional when it arrives, but it could become the default view in the future.
These new features are rolling out to paying subscribers starting today, while free users will have access to email summaries, Help me write, and Suggested replies. However, proofread and search AI Overviews (and presumably AI Inbox) will initially only be available to premium AI plan holders.
Google notes that the company is used to allowing users to disable these features if they don't want them. However, the new Gemini system doesn't have a toggle for disabling it, as it's lumped into "Smart Features" with other tools like package tracking cards and calendar integration.
