Google announces AI Overviews in Gmail search, experimental AI-organized inbox

Google is bringing its AI-powered Inbox features to Gmail, making them more integral and useful for users. The company has announced several new AI-driven features that will enhance the email experience.

One of these features is AI Overviews, which provides a summary of email chains in search results. This feature allows users to enter natural language searches and receive a response from Google's Gemini AI system. For example, if you search for "past plumbing quote," Gmail would show an AI-generated answer that includes relevant information and cites the corresponding emails.

Another new feature is a proofreading tool called AI Proofread, which will offer suggestions to streamline and clarify writing in emails. This tool uses Google's largest and most powerful Gemini 3 models, allowing it to make more nuanced changes than standard spellchecking features.

Additionally, Gmail is introducing an "AI Inbox" that looks at unread mail and creates an interactive list with priorities and a "Catch me up" section for less important messages. The AI Inbox will be optional when it arrives, but it could become the default view in the future.

These new features are rolling out to paying subscribers starting today, while free users will have access to email summaries, Help me write, and Suggested replies. However, proofread and search AI Overviews (and presumably AI Inbox) will initially only be available to premium AI plan holders.

Google notes that the company is used to allowing users to disable these features if they don't want them. However, the new Gemini system doesn't have a toggle for disabling it, as it's lumped into "Smart Features" with other tools like package tracking cards and calendar integration.

πŸ€” just another way google is trying to own our inboxes πŸ“§ think about how much of our lives we spend on email and how often we wish there was a way to make it more efficient... now they're trying to use AI to help us out πŸ’» but what's with the Gemini system not having a disable toggle? seems like a bit too much control over our inbox 🚫

What's up with all these AI features? πŸ€” I'm kinda excited about 'em, but also a bit worried that Google is getting too smart for its own good 😳. I mean, do we really want our inboxes to be controlled by an AI system that can make changes without us explicitly telling it what to do? πŸ”’ On the other hand, the idea of having all that info at my fingertips is pretty cool πŸ“Š. Maybe this is just the future we're meant to have? 🌐 One thing's for sure though - I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on how these features turn out and whether they live up to the hype πŸ’»

I'm so hyped about this 🀩! AI Overviews is literally going to change the game for me, I can already imagine how much time I'll save searching through my emails... like, no more scrolling through a gazillion threads, just get a concise summary of what's going on and I'm good to go πŸ”πŸ’». And that proofreading tool? Genius! I've always struggled with formatting and clarity in my emails, this is gonna be a total lifesaver πŸ™Œ. Can't wait for the "AI Inbox" feature too, it sounds like it'll really streamline my workflow... plus, who wouldn't want to see their unread mail prioritized automatically? πŸ˜‚

I'm super hyped about these AI-powered Gmail updates 🀩! I mean, who doesn't love having an extra pair of hands to help them sort through their inbox? The AI Overviews feature is going to be a game-changer for me - no more digging through entire email threads to find that one specific message... it's like having my own personal research assistant πŸ’‘. And the proofreading tool sounds amazing! I'm always worried about hitting send with a typos-only-filled email... now I can just chill and let Google handle it 😊. The AI Inbox is also super cool, it's like having my very own email butler 🀝. Can't wait to try these out and see what kind of productivity boost they bring! πŸ’»

idk about this AI takeover πŸ€–... i mean, i'm all for making email more useful, but do we really need an AI to summarize our whole inbox? it just feels like a step too far to me... what's next, AI-powered reminders that tell us what to say and do? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

i do think the proofread tool could be useful, though - i've been there when i've sent emails with typos or awkward phrasing... it'd be nice to have some help with that. but what's up with making AI Overviews and the AI Inbox only available to premium users? shouldn't everyone get access to these features if they want them? πŸ€‘

I'm not sure about all these AI-driven features being rolled out to Gmail... I mean, I'm all for making life easier, but sometimes less is more, you know? πŸ€” I've used Gmail for ages and never really needed all the bells and whistles, just a simple interface that works. Now they're adding these "Smart Features" like AI Inbox and whatnot... sounds like it's gonna get cluttered in my opinion. Still, I suppose if people want more control over their inbox, that's their prerogative. πŸ“Š

I'm not sure I love this new AI-driven feature update from Gmail πŸ€”. On one hand, AI Overviews sounds super useful for quickly getting the gist of an email chain, but on the other hand, having all these features lumped into "Smart Features" without a toggle to disable them can be kinda annoying. Like, what if I just want to keep my old-school Gmail experience πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ? Can't we have options for that too?

I'm not sure about all this... I mean, on one hand, it sounds amazing to be able to get instant answers to your questions just by searching in Gmail πŸ€”. But at the same time, having these features always on is kinda weird... like, what if you're just trying to have a chill conversation with someone and AI starts interrupting with suggestions?

But I guess that's just how tech is moving forward πŸ’». It's gonna be interesting to see how users adapt to all this new stuff. The idea of having an "AI Inbox" sounds pretty cool, though... like, it could really help with staying organized πŸ“. And the proofread tool sounds super helpful for those who write a lot of emails πŸ“¨.

I'm just hoping that Google doesn't get too caught up in "smart features" and forgets about giving users more control over what they use πŸ’Έ.

idk about all this AI craze... sounds like google is trying to make emails more automated πŸ€–... think they're overdoing it. what's wrong with good ol' fashioned manual email checking? plus, don't even get me started on the whole 'catch up' section... just another thing to distract us from actually doing stuff πŸ™„... and proofread tool sounds like a great way to make me look bad in front of my clients... probably gonna make more mistakes than I already do πŸ˜….
