Tragedy Strikes in India's Tourist Hotspot as Deadly Nightclub Fire Claims 25 Lives
A devastating fire broke out at a popular nightclub in Goa on Saturday night, claiming the lives of 25 people, including four members of the same family who were on their first holiday to the tropical destination.
The blaze, which occurred just before midnight, ravaged the Birch by Romeo Lane venue in Aporna district, trapping and killing 20 staff members mostly working in the kitchen area. The victims succumbed to suffocation due to a lack of fire safety exits in the basement, where they were confined when the fire erupted.
Among those killed were four family members who had traveled from Delhi for their first holiday together. Three sisters and one husband were among the dead, with only one sister managing to escape. Family friend Harish Singh described the harrowing scene: "The sisters rushed inside, followed by Vinod to save their kin. Everyone was running around, some people stuck in the kitchen, no proper exits."
Four Indian tourists from Delhi and Karnataka also lost their lives, including three sisters who had just finished dinner at the club before succumbing to the inferno.
An investigation has revealed that the venue had repeatedly flouted safety regulations, with contraventions including hosting a live music show featuring pyrotechnics when the fire broke out. The technical evaluation suggests possible short-circuiting in electrical systems or faulty electrics may have triggered the blaze.
The authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident, and police have arrested the venue's general manager, owners, and event organizers. A high-level committee has been formed to examine the incident, with a report due within a week.
The tragic events highlight concerns over safety regulations in India's booming tourism industry, where popular destinations like Goa often prioritize entertainment and revenue over risk management and fire safety protocols.
