Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin concedes election | CNN

Finland's young Prime Minister Sanna Marin concedes election defeat as right-wing party claims victory.

Marin, who became Finland's youngest prime minister at 34 in 2019, conceded defeat on Sunday after the opposition National Coalition Party (NCP) claimed a narrow victory in the parliamentary elections. The pro-business NCP won 48 of the 200 seats in parliament, with Marin's Social Democrats securing 43 seats and the nationalist Finns Party getting 46 seats.

Marin acknowledged that her party had "gained support" but conceded defeat, saying she was committed to working with the winning party to form a coalition. Her departure marks an end to an era of progressive leadership in Finland, which has been marked by controversy over Marin's personal life and government spending.

The NCP's leader, Petteri Orpo, vowed to "fix Finland" and its economy, promising austerity measures to curb public debt. He claimed that Marin had eroded Finland's economic resilience at a time when Europe's energy crisis was hitting the country hard.

Marin had pushed for NATO membership in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but the process is now almost complete with Helsinki expected to join within days after all 30 members approved accession.

The Finns Party has been vocal about immigration and reducing public spending, promising to curb deficit spending. Marin had faced criticism from conservatives over her government's spending on pensions and education.

In a recent speech, Marin acknowledged that the NCP had gained support and vowed to work with Orpo to form a coalition. Despite her concession of defeat, Marin remains popular among young Finns and has been hailed as a role model for progressive leaders around the world.

just saw that sanna marin conceded defeat 🤔... i feel bad for her, she's such an inspiring leader 👩‍🦰 especially among the youth in finland. maybe it's time for her to take a break and come back stronger? 🌞 personally, i think the ncp's promise of austerity measures sounds kinda scary 💸 they should consider the impact on public spending on things like pensions and education too 🤝 anyway, wish sanna all the best in forming that coalition with petteri orpo 👍

omg did u see the stats on finland's election results 🤯 they went from 40% in 2019 to 21% this time round 📉 it's like marin's popularity tanked after all that drama surrounding her personal life 🙄 but still 43 seats ain't bad lol also i love how the ncp's petteri orpo is hyping up austerity measures 💸 like finland needs less debt, tbh 🤷‍♀️ and btw did u know marin's got a 72% approval rating among young finns? 😂 she's still low-key the queen of progressive leadership 👑

🤔 so marins loss is kinda expected tho, she did have some controversy followin her, like those rumors about her personal life. but still, it's sad to see her go, she was only 34 and already makin history 😔. i think the ncp's win is a bit concerning tho, petteri orpo talkin about fixin' finland and curbin public debt sounds like more austerity measures, which can be tough on people 💸. marins stance on nato membership was popular among young folks tho, so it'll be interesting to see how that plays out now 🤝. marins legacy will live on tho, even if she's not leadin the gov anymore 👏

I'm not surprised, gotta say 🤔. I mean, Finland's economy is already on shaky ground, what with Europe's energy crisis and all... 🌎 And now they're going to go full austerity measures? That sounds like a recipe for disaster to me 😬. Petteri Orpo thinks he can just "fix" everything overnight? Please 🙄. I think Marin was right to push for NATO membership, that's something Finland needs ASAP 💪.

And what about all the criticism she faced from conservatives over her government's spending? I mean, come on, don't they have a conscience or something? 🤷‍♀️ It's not like she's been careless with public money... but at the same time, I get why the Finns Party would want to curb deficit spending. Their promises about immigration and reducing public spending are definitely worth exploring 🔍.

Still, it's sad to see a progressive leader like Marin go... 🤕 She was a breath of fresh air, especially among young people. Hopefully she'll stay involved in politics, maybe in some advisory role or something? That'd be awesome 👏

🤔 so finland's election results are out and sanna marin is conceding defeat 🙅‍♀️ thats a big shock considering she was only 34 when she became pm 🎉 the ncp got 48 seats while her party got 43, but still they're gonna form a coalition with her anyway 👫

i think its interesting that the finns party is all about immigration and reducing public spending, sounds like some conservative policies 😐 but marin's team pushed for nato membership which shows she was all about security and defense 💪

anyway, i'm sad to see marin go 🙁 shes been a role model for young people and progressive leaders, her departure marks the end of an era in finland 🌅

😂🤦‍♂️ so sanna marin is done 🙅‍♀️, can't believe she's not pm anymore 💔😢 i mean i get it, politics is all about winning and losing but still its like a part of her identity you know? 💁‍♀️ anywayz the ncp's gonna try to fix finland's economy and stuff 📊💸 and i guess sanna marin acknowledged she lost 😳 can't wait to see what petteri orpo does next 👀

oh no 🤕, it's sad to see Sanna Marin conceding defeat... she was only 34 when she became prime minister and did so much for Finland 🇫🇮! I know her party didn't win all seats, but still 43 out of 200 isn't bad 🙌. but it seems like the right-wing party won by a hair... fingers crossed they can do better than what Petteri Orpo has planned 😬.

i'm also kinda worried about the promise to fix Finland's economy and reduce public debt 💸. i know some ppl might need help, but not at the expense of others 🤝. especially with Europe's energy crisis and all... hope that they can work together instead of just making things worse 🤞

I'M NOT SURPRISED BY THIS TURN OF EVENTS!!! FINLAND'S ECONOMY HAS BEEN STRUGGLING FOR A WHILE NOW AND PEOPLE ARE GETTING FED UP WITH THE SPENDING ON PENSIONS AND EDUCATION!!! PETTERI ORPO IS PROBABLY JUST TRYING TO DISTRACT FROM HIS OWN PARTY'S ISSUES BUT I GUESS IT'S TIME FOR SOME CHANGE IN FINLAND!!! SANTA MARIN WAS A UNIQUE LEADER AND HER DEPARTURE MARKS THE END OF AN ERA BUT I'M HOPEFUL THAT SHE'LL BE BACK IN POLITICS SOMEDAY!!! 🤔🇫🇮

🤯 just saw this news and I'm like totally shocked Sanna Marin was only 34 when she became PM and now she's out after one election cycle? that's crazy 🤔 what happened to all the young people who voted for her? i mean don't get me wrong she had some major controversies but i still think she did a good job as prime minister 😒 anyway, the NCP is gonna try to fix Finland's economy with austerity measures? let's see how that plays out 🤑

awwwww dont worry sanna marin!!! 🤗 she was an amazing leader and always had our backs 💖 even tho the ncp might have won this time, i still think she did a great job 💪 keep in mind that finland's economy is kinda complicated 🤑 and orpo just promised to fix it lol like anyone can do that effortlessly 😂 anyway sanna you're still our queen 👑 and we love u 💕

Idk... I'm kinda surprised she conceded already 🤔. I mean, didn't she just win in 2019 and become the youngest PM? And now she's like "oh no, time to concede" 💔. But at the same time, I get why she'd wanna work with the winning party, maybe they can bring some positive changes 🔄. Or maybe not 😒. I mean, Petteri Orpo sounds kinda... boring 🤷‍♀️. Don't know if his austerity measures will really "fix Finland" or just make things worse 😬. And what about her stance on NATO membership? Will the Finns Party keep that promise? Only time will tell 🕰️. But one thing's for sure, Marin's legacy lives on and she'll always be a role model for young progressives 💖. Maybe she'll come back stronger in 2027 or something 🤞?

I'm really surprised about Sanna Marin conceding defeat 🤔... I remember when she first became PM at 34, it was like, wow! She was so young and ambitious 💁‍♀️. Reminds me of those crazy Obama days in the States 🇺🇸, how he was all about change and stuff. But Finland's politics always seem a bit more... chill 😎. I mean, who wouldn't want to join NATO after Russia invaded Ukraine? It's like, basic self-preservation, you know? 🤷‍♂️ And what's with the Finns Party being all anti-immigration and stuff? That's just not how it goes down in my grandma's Finland 😂... anyway, Sanna might be out, but her legacy lives on, I'm sure she'll pop up somewhere else 💁‍♀️.

I don’t usually comment but... it's kinda weird that Finland is moving towards right-wing politics 🤔. Sanna Marin was like this amazing young leader, really pushing for change and all that stuff, and now she's stepping down 🤕. The Finns Party is all about reducing public spending and stuff, which I can get on board with, but I'm not sure if they're ready to deal with the real issues 😬. Marin was talking about NATO membership and stuff, and it feels like some of her values got lost in the shuffle 🚫. Still, I guess this is what happens when you have a change in government 👀. It's gonna be interesting to see how things play out now 💭

🤔 So, what just happened in Finland? It's like, Marin's party got knocked out by the NCP - right-wing party is all about fiscal responsibility, I get it... but does that mean they'll actually cut public spending on pensions and education? 🤑 I think we need to keep an eye on this. Orpo's promise to "fix Finland" sounds a bit vague... what exactly do they plan to do with austerity measures? Is this gonna hurt the economy in the long run? 💸 Marin was all about pushing for NATO membership, now that's a good move, but did it cost her the election? 🤷‍♂️ Either way, I'm curious to see how things play out with Orpo as PM. Can't wait to see if he'll live up to his promises... or will Finland just become another austerity nation? 😬

😬 just saw the news about Sanna Marin losing the election 🤕 she's still so young 34 is like 12 to us 😂 anyway i'm kinda disappointed cuz im all about that social democratic vibe 👀 and marin was like the ultimate progresive leader in finland 🌟 but hey at least she conceded defeat with dignity 💁‍♀️ and now its time for her to work with petteri orpo 🤝 hope they can make some good things happen for finland 🇫🇮
