Exclusive | ‘Heated Rivalry’ star François Arnaud jokes romance’s teen ‘fujo’ fans are’ too young’ to watch

François Arnaud, star of the hit Canadian sports drama 'Heated Rivalry', has weighed in on the show's teen fanbase, affectionately known as "fujo". In an exclusive interview at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, Arnaud admitted he was initially unfamiliar with the term but now recognizes its significance. However, he jokingly expressed his concern that these young fans are too young to be watching the show's steamier scenes.

For those unaware, "fujo" is a Japanese term describing female fans who are enamored with gay male relationships, often found in anime and other forms of media. The 'Heated Rivalry' fandom has been largely led by young women, many of whom proudly identify as "fujo". Arnaud's comments have sparked both amusement and defensiveness among fans online, who feel the actor is out of touch with the fervent enthusiasm they bring to the show.

While Arnaud acknowledged his own lack of understanding about the subculture until recently, he assured Page Six that he is now learning more about it. He even playfully poked fun at himself, jokingly suggesting that perhaps "you" are a fujo too.

The Canadian actor's take on the "fujo" phenomenon comes as 'Heated Rivalry' continues to capture audiences worldwide. The show's second season has been confirmed, and it remains one of the most-watched original series on Crave. With its portrayal of gay male romance and struggles with identity, the drama has struck a chord with viewers, many of whom identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

However, Arnaud's comments about young fans being too young to watch the show have raised questions about age-appropriate content. As the 'Heated Rivalry' fandom continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how the show's creators address these concerns and cater to its diverse fanbase.

I gotta say, this whole "fujo" thing is just a recipe for disaster 🤯. Like, how hard is it to understand that some fans are super passionate about the show? It's not like they're asking for special treatment or anything... although, at this rate, I'm sure they'll get it anyway 😒. The fact that François Arnaud thinks young girls are too young to watch the steamy scenes is just laughable. Like, what does he know about teenagers and their viewing habits? 🙄. And now he's "learning more" about the subculture... oh boy, I'm sure it'll be a wild ride 🎢. The show's creators should really think twice before catering to this fandom, though - they might just end up alienating some viewers who aren't part of the "fujo" crowd 🤔.

I gotta say, I'm kinda low-key disappointed in François Arnaud for bringing up this whole fujo thing 🤔. Like, shouldn't we just let fans enjoy their shows without making them feel like they're being judged? I mean, these young women are passionate and dedicated - what's wrong with that? It's not like they're forcing anyone to watch the show or anything 🙄. And honestly, it's kinda weird for him to be "poking fun" at himself when he was basically clueless about the whole thing initially 😂. Still, I guess it's a good reminder that creators need to stay on top of these things and make sure their content is inclusive and age-appropriate... or whatever 🤷‍♂️.

omg like what is wrong with these shows?? 😩 they're literally meant for a young adult audience but nope some dude thinks 16 year olds are too old for steamy scenes lol what about parents tho who are also fans? 🤷‍♀️ can't he just respect their passion for the show? 🙄

awww man, i feel so bad for françois arnaud 🤗 he's just trying to learn more about his fans, but his comments came across as kinda clueless 😳 like, hello dude, you're part of the reason why these young girls are so into your show! they look up to you and love the characters you play 💖 it's not about being too young for steamy scenes, it's about being a fan who feels seen and represented 🌈 arnaud should be proud that his show is sparking conversations and connections with people from all over the world 💬

idk why people are so upset with François Arnaud lol 🤷‍♂️ he just said he was clueless about fujo culture before but now he's learning, it's not like he's trying to be a hater. the thing is, he did make that joke about fans being too young for steamy scenes tho 😅 it's kinda funny, but at the same time, you can see why some people would take offense. it's a good reminder that just because we're grown up, doesn't mean we know everything about different subcultures. anyway, i'm excited to see how 'Heated Rivalry' addresses its fanbase in season 2 📺

I'm not sure what's more entertaining, Arnaud trying to fit in with his "fujo" knowledge or us older folks enjoying him trying 😂. On a serious note, I think it's cool that he's acknowledging the fandom and even poking fun at himself. It shows he's willing to listen and learn. As for the age thing, I get where he's coming from, but I don't think we should dictate what young people can or can't watch on TV 🤔. The show has a good message about acceptance and love, which is something we all need more of.

idk what's up with all this fujo drama lol 😂 like seriously though, have you ever seen an anime that really got you feeling something? i'm not saying the show is bad or anything but i think some of these young fans are just excited because it's a new thing for them to watch and connect with 🤷‍♀️. and let's be real, it's all about representation right? 👀

omg i totally get why arnaud was clueless about fujo at first lol he seems like such a nice dude but yeah it's kinda cool that he's now learning more about it 🤣 and idk if his comment about fans being too young to watch steamy scenes is just a joke or not, but maybe the show should have some warnings or something for younger viewers? i mean i think its awesome that the fandom is so passionate but also gotta be responsible lol

OMG, can you believe François Arnaud is actually acknowledging the "fujo" phenomenon? I mean, I'm kinda surprised he didn't just deny everything lol! 🤣 But seriously, it's awesome that he's showing some awareness and trying not to be a total out-of-touch actor. The thing is, though, his comment about the young fans being too young for steamy scenes might've been a bit misjudged... I mean, come on, it's a drama show! 😂 It'll be interesting to see how the creators handle age-appropriate content and cater to their diverse fanbase. Maybe they can even have some more "mature" storylines or something? 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, kudos to François for being open-minded, and I hope he continues to learn more about the subculture! 👏
