Ex-Cub Anthony Rizzo shows support for Edison Park deli after armed robbery

Former Chicago Cub Anthony Rizzo has thrown his support behind Tony's Italian Deli & Subs in Edison Park after a shocking armed robbery on November 15. The Cubs icon, who retired from baseball this year but rejoined the team as an ambassador, visited the deli on November 23, leaving staff members thrilled and even more grateful for their community.

Photos circulating online show Rizzo mingling with staff, signing autographs, and even helping himself to a sandwich. "We were absolutely thrilled and completely surprised by a visit from [Rizzo]," Tony's Italian Deli & Subs said in a statement on social media. The sentiment is shared across the team, who have been nothing short of remarkable in their resilience in the face of adversity.

The deli was hit by an armed robbery early on November 15, with three masked robbers making off with cash registers and causing chaos. However, what happened next is a testament to the strength of the Edison Park community. The deli's staff remained undeterred, and despite being placed in harm's way during the incident, they chose to open for business that morning.

The outpouring of support from Rizzo has only served to amplify this sense of community spirit. "Now it's our turn to step up for them," he said on social media, encouraging his fans to visit Tony's and show their support. With nearly 10 major-league seasons under his belt with the Cubs, including a World Series championship in 2016, Rizzo knows what it means to be part of something special.

Rizzo himself has been through trials by fire, having founded the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation in 2012 to raise funds for cancer research and support families affected by the disease. His visit to Tony's is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest times, there are those who will step up and show their support for one another.

The family behind Tony's Italian Deli & Subs – Vito and Maria, along with their team – have been left overwhelmed but grateful for the love and support from the community. The Edison Park neighborhood has rallied around them, and it's clear that this outpouring of kindness will not soon be forgotten.

I don’t usually comment but... I think it's so cool to see a community come together like this 🤩. I mean, the staff at Tony's Italian Deli & Subs could've easily let an armed robbery ruin their day, but they chose to stay strong and keep serving customers. And then Anthony Rizzo shows up and makes everyone feel like they're part of something special 💪. It's a great reminder that even when bad things happen, there are always good people who will help make things right ❤️. I think this is what being part of a community is all about 🌟.

I'm loving the vibes coming out of Edison Park right now! 😊 I mean, who wouldn't want to visit a deli after hearing about an armed robbery? But seriously, it's amazing to see the community come together like that. The fact that staff members still showed up to work and opened for business that morning is just incredible 🤯.

And can we talk about how awesome Anthony Rizzo is for visiting Tony's and showing his support? I'm sure he must've had a lot on his plate with his foundation and all, but he's still taking the time to spread love and kindness to this community ❤️. It's a great reminder that even in tough times, there are people who care and want to make a difference.

🤗 It's amazing how a simple visit from Anthony Rizzo can bring so much joy to a community that was shaken by an armed robbery just a few days before 🤕. The fact that Tony's Italian Deli & Subs staff remained open and cheerful after going through such a traumatic experience is truly inspiring 💕. As someone who's been around for a while, I've seen my fair share of ups and downs, but this outpouring of love from Rizzo and the community reminds me that there's still so much good in the world ❤️. The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation does incredible work, but it's clear that Rizzo himself is making a difference through his visit to Tony's 🙌. What a wonderful reminder that kindness and generosity can come from unexpected places 💖!

Ugh, can we talk about how this is all just a bunch of photo ops on social media? 🤦‍♂️ I mean, sure, Tony's Italian Deli & Subs is sweet and all, but it feels like everyone's just trying to get some good content for their feeds. The staff is supposed to be resilient in the face of adversity, but are they really? Or were they just happy to have a chance to meet Anthony Rizzo and get some free publicity? 📸

And don't even get me started on how this whole thing is being used to make Anthony Rizzo look like a hero. I mean, yeah, he's done some good work with the foundation, but let's not forget that he's also got a lot of time to waste signing autographs and taking selfies. 🤷‍♂️

lol @ Rizzo being all chill at Tony's after they got robbed lol his visit is actually pretty cool tho 🤝 i mean its not every day you see a celeb show up uninvited like that but the real heroes are those who ran the deli on the same day of the robbery in any case it just goes to show u can't take away community spirit 💪 and btw tony's deli should get some good recs from Rizzo lol

ugh, robbery hits small deli in edison park on nov 15 🤕 and now they're flooded with customers thanks to anthony rizzo 🙌 guess the community spirit is a double-edged sword... some ppl say its good, but it also means more people are gonna come and try to rob them again. meanwhile, rizzo's visit made the staff cry happy tears 🎉, but idk how long that feeling will last

😩 I'm still getting vibes from that armed robbery at Tony's Italian Deli & Subs... 3 masked robbers just walkin' in, causin' chaos, and makin' off with cash registers. That's some scary stuff 🤯. Glad the staff was able to open up for business that same day tho, shows a lot of heart 💕. And now Anthony Rizzo is showin' his support? Awesome! The dude has been through some stuff himself, knowin' what it means to be part of somethin' special 🌟. But let's not forget about the community comin' together after that robbery... that's what really matters ❤️.
