Eton head apologises after former teacher jailed for sexual assault of pupil

Eton College Head Apologises After Former Teacher's Jail Sentence for Sexually Assaulting Pupil

The headteacher of Eton college has issued a formal apology and expressed his "appalled" reaction after a former teacher was jailed for three years and three months for sexually assaulting one of his pupils in 2012. Jacob Leland, then 23, committed the assaults at his flat and during a school trip while working as a Russian teacher at the prestigious all-boys boarding school.

Leland's victims first met him after he invited them to his flat, where he gave them alcohol and cigarettes. Once alone, he carried out the initial assault, kissing the boy before placing the pupil's hands over his own groin area. A further assault occurred during a school trip, with Leland performing oral sex on the boy.

The former teacher was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault on a male after a trial at Reading crown court last year. The headteacher, Simon Henderson, described Leland's actions as "the most egregious breach of trust" and reiterated that Eton's pupils' welfare is its top priority. However, he acknowledged that the school's processes failed to prevent the abuse.

Henderson expressed his apologies to the victims on behalf of the school, stating that "those who were directly impacted had the right to be safe and secure in our care." He also acknowledged that the details of the abuse did not come to light until several years after the incidents occurred.

πŸ€• so sorry to hear about this, it's just another example of how vulnerable kids can get taken advantage of by someone in a position of power πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. I'm glad the justice system was able to catch up with Jacob Leland and hold him accountable for his actions, 3 years is still too long but better than nothing πŸ˜”. Eton College should be commended for taking responsibility for their failures and apologizing to the victims πŸ‘. It's not an excuse but it's a step in the right direction to make sure this never happens again 🚫.

can u imagine if ur teacher was like this? it would be super hard 2 trust them & feel safe in class πŸ€• but the thing is, even tho we cant change the past, we can learn from it & make sure somethin similar never happens again πŸ™ its all about accountability & takin responsibility for our actions. schools gotta have strict policies in place 2 prevent this kinda stuff from happenin. every1 deserves 2 feel safe n sound, especially kids who r supposed 2 be learnin n growin πŸ“š

πŸ˜” This is just disgusting... Eton college is supposed to be this elite institution, but it's clear they failed to protect their kids. I'm all for accountability, and it sounds like Henderson is finally taking responsibility. 3 yrs & 3 months in jail seems like a decent sentence tho, wish the kid had more support during that traumatic time πŸ€•

I mean, what's up with this? Eton College, one of those super prestigious schools, and they got a teacher who's literally doing who-knows-what to his students... and it takes 'em like 3 years to catch on?! It's just not right, you know? I'm glad the guy's getting some serious time behind bars, but it's also kinda shocking that it took so long for someone to step in. And now this headteacher is apologizin' and sayin' all the wrong things... like it's not their fault or somethin'. Newsflash: it's your job to protect those kids! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I'm just glad the victims are gettin' some kinda justice, even if it's late.

omg this is such a messed up situation 🀯 i mean like how can someone even do something so horrific to a kid and get away with it for 3 whole years?? it's crazy. i know eton college is supposed to be all fancy and stuff but like shouldn't they have been paying attention to their teachers or something? πŸ€” simon henderson sounds like a pretty decent guy though, he's actually apologizing to the victims which is more than some people would do. anyway, it just goes to show that even in posh schools, there are going to be problems and you gotta make sure they get dealt with ASAP πŸ’―

πŸ€•πŸ« I'm so sorry to hear about this horrific incident at Eton College... it's just devastating for all those who were affected, especially the young boy who went through this traumatic experience πŸ™. The headteacher is right to say that Eton's pupils' welfare is its top priority, but at the same time, I think the school really needs to take a hard look at how they can prevent something like this from happening again in the future πŸ”. It's not just about apologizing and promising change, it's about actually doing the work to create a safe and supportive environment for all students πŸ‘ͺ.

omg cant believe what happened at Eton college 🀯 the fact that some teacher was doing this stuff to kids is just sickening 😷 3 yrs & 3 months in jail seems like a joke compared to how much trauma those boys went through i feel so bad for them having to go thru all that and not even getting closure til now πŸ€•

idk how can they apologize for this? like, 13 yrs went by since it happened πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ and only now are they saying sorry? what about the other kids he might've done this to?! shouldn't they've been checked on sooner?! also, isn't Eton's whole thing being super elite & prep you for life? how is that even possible with ppl like Leland walking around?!

can't believe how easy it is for people in power to get away with this stuff πŸ€•. three years and three months just isn't enough time to make up for what happened to those kids, you know? it's not just about the prison sentence, it's about holding people accountable from the start. schools like Eton have a responsibility to protect their students and it sounds like they totally dropped the ball on this one 🚫. apologies aren't enough when you're talking about abuse of power and trust.

can't believe these things still happen 🀯 it's just a normal day when you hear about some dude getting caught for abusing kids, like what even is the point? anyway, i was thinking, why do we need schools to be so formal and stuffy all the time? wouldn't it be way more effective if they just made a culture of openness and trust from the start? i mean, like, if those 23-year-old Russian teachers had just been open with the kids about what's cool and not cool, none of this would have happened πŸ€”

πŸ€• this is so upsetting, i mean i'm glad justice was served but 3 years & 3 months is still way too long for someone who's supposed to be teaching kids 🀯 how can u even invite them to ur flat & make 'em feel safe then take advantage of 'em like that? 🚫 eton college needs to do better at spotting these kinds of ppl, idk wot kinda background checks they do 4 new staff lol πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

man i'm so sorry to hear about this πŸ€• another scandal like this is just heartbreaking. how could someone do such a thing to those innocent kids? and the fact that it happened in a school, where they're supposed to feel safe & supported, is just devastating πŸ˜”. i hope the victims can find some kind of closure now that justice has been served. 3 years & 3 months is still way too long, but at least they'll get the help they need πŸ™. and kudos to simon henderson for owning up to eton's failures & apologizing on behalf of the school πŸ‘. we've got to do better to prevent this kind of thing from happening again πŸ’ͺ.

I'm really disappointed in Eton College's handling of this situation πŸ€•. I mean, three years and 3 months is a long time for someone to be committing these atrocities and still getting away with it for so long. The fact that they only found out about it now, years later, is just shocking. And the headteacher's apology seems a bit... late don't you think? πŸ€” I'm all for apologies but some people deserve more than just words, especially if they've been hurt like this. They need closure and justice! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one... Three years and three months for sexually assaulting a pupil? Sounds like a pretty lenient sentence if you ask me πŸ˜’. I mean, I get that the guy's in his 40s now, but come on! He was working with kids at Eton, one of the most prestigious schools in the world 🀝. You'd think they'd have some sort of vetting process in place to prevent something like this from happening. But I guess not? πŸ˜• And the headteacher's apology is just a band-aid on a bullet wound... sorry guys, can't help but feel like that's just not enough πŸ’”.

omg I was just thinking about my old cat Mr Whiskers 🐈, he died like 2 years ago but I still keep a photo of him on my phone and sometimes I look at it when I'm feeling down... anyway back to Eton college, sorry guys I know this is super serious but have you ever tried those new coffee shops that just opened up in town? 🍡 I mean they have the best flat whites and their pastries are insane, I went there with my friends last weekend and we had a blast... what was the point of Eton college's apology again? πŸ€”

man this is just heartbreaking πŸ€•... i mean, eton's reputation is already pretty tainted, but to have a former teacher get caught for something like this? it's just sad πŸ€”. simon henderson's apology is decent, i guess, but can't we do more to prevent this kind of thing in the future? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ i mean, the fact that leland was able to carry out these assaults with people knowing he worked at eton? it just goes to show how lax our systems can be sometimes πŸ˜”. and now, years later, victims are coming forward... that's tough on them, you know? πŸ€—

OMG, I'm still shook by this one 🀯! I mean, can you believe some grown man doing this to a 14-year-old kid? It's just sickening 😷. Eton College is like, super prestigious and all, but it's clear they had some major blind spots when it came to keeping their students safe πŸ’‘. I'm glad the head teacher is owning up to it and apologizing on behalf of the school, though πŸ™. It's about time someone took responsibility for not stopping this from happening sooner. Three years isn't even enough time for those kids to heal from what they went through πŸ˜”.

πŸ€• I'm so sorry to hear about this, it's just heartbreaking that a young boy was taken advantage of like that. It's appalling that someone with such power and influence over those boys could take such advantage of them πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. You'd think that Eton College would be doing more to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future, but I guess they learned a hard lesson too πŸ˜”.

I feel for the victims who have to deal with this all these years later, it's not fair that they're still having to face their demons πŸ€•. The fact that the headteacher is finally coming forward and apologizing is a step in the right direction, but I wish there was more being done to support them πŸ’”.

It just goes to show that no matter how prestigious or respected you are, you're not above the law βš–οΈ. And sometimes, it's the ones we trust the most who can hurt us the most 😟.
