A 21-year-old Staten Island supermarket employee has been slapped with arson and other charges after allegedly setting a fire at his workplace just hours before Thanksgiving. Dominick Sacchetti, who works at the ShopRite on Greaves Lane in Bay Terrace, is accused of sparking the blaze around 3:45 p.m. on November 26, causing an estimated $100,000 in damages.
According to officials, the store was open and filled with shoppers preparing for the holiday when Sacchetti allegedly started the fire, which spread quickly and engulfed various items including household cleaning products. However, the actions of a customer who intervened by using a fire extinguisher may have prevented a potentially disastrous outcome - the fire did not result in any injuries.
FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker expressed his concern over the incident, stating that the individual's actions put the lives of shoppers and responding firefighters at risk. Sacchetti has been charged with multiple counts of arson, as well as criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. He was arraigned on Tuesday and released after posting bail set at $50,000.
Richmond County District Attorney Michael McMahon stated that his office would pursue the case to the fullest extent of the law. As the investigation continues, Sacchetti's lawyer has yet to comment on their client's involvement in the incident.
