A Staten Island supermarket employee, 21-year-old Dominick Sacchetti, has been charged with arson and other offenses after allegedly setting a fire at his workplace on the eve of Thanksgiving. The ShopRite store on Greaves Lane in Bay Terrace sustained more than $100,000 in estimated damages.
According to officials, the blaze began around 3:45 p.m. on November 26, as shoppers were preparing for the holiday. Surveillance footage shows a fire starting on an aisle containing household cleaning products and spreading rapidly before a customer intervened with a fire extinguisher, putting out the flames.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, but firefighters say that the actions of the individual who put out the fire could have put their own lives at risk. "While residents of Staten Island were beginning to prepare for Thanksgiving with their families, this individual put the lives of shoppers and responding firefighters at risk," said FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker.
Sacchetti faces multiple charges, including several counts of arson, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment. He was arraigned on Tuesday and released after posting bail set at $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond. The Richmond County District Attorney has pledged to prosecute the case to the fullest extent of the law.
The fire marshal's office said that the investigation is ongoing, but it appears that Sacchetti acted alone in setting the blaze. His lawyer has not yet commented on the charges against him.
