Emma Raducanu wary of Anastasia Potapova at Australian Open as British No 1 bids to reach third round in Melbourne

British No1 Emma Raducanu is bracing herself for a tough test against Anastasia Potapova in her Australian Open second round match on Wednesday. The Russian-born Austrian has been tipped as a contender to reach the third round, and Raducanu acknowledges that she will be facing a formidable opponent.

Raducanu won her opening match in Melbourne, overcoming Thailand's world No 195 Mananchaya Sawangkaew 6-4 6-1. The British player is now looking forward to two days of preparation for the second-round tie against Potapova, and she knows that this will be a challenging encounter.

Raducanu has been aware of Potapova's talent for some time, watching her compete in junior tournaments and being impressed by her skills. She also recognizes the Russian-born Austrian's strong ranking credentials and powerful game.

"It's going to be a really tricky one," Raducanu said after her opening match. "I need to just gather my strength and prepare as best as possible."

The British player has had personal experience of struggling with injuries, missing three Grand Slams in 2023 due to operations on both wrists and an ankle. She knows what it's like to feel two steps slow when returning from a long lay-off.

"The hardest thing is moving, seeing the ball," Raducanu cautioned against too high expectations for Draper after her experience of returning from injuries. "It's something that you take for granted when you've played a few matches and you're in a good momentum, you seem to just read the ball earlier, read the game, read the situations and play the big points better."

Raducanu has backed Jack Draper, who is set to make his return from injury at the Davis Cup next month. The British player empathizes with Draper's experience of missing Grand Slams due to injury and cautions against too high expectations for him as he returns.

"I really hope we can both make it next year," Raducanu said.

omg, Emma Raducanu is gonna need all the mental prep she can get against Potapova 🀯... I mean, the Russian-born Austrian has been on fire in junior tournaments and her ranking credentials are crazy strong πŸ’ͺ. And with Raducanu's injury history coming back to bite her, this could be a make-or-break moment for both of them 🌊... what if she gets too caught up in trying to hype herself up after that first win and loses focus? πŸ€”

πŸ€” I mean, Emma Raducanu is gonna have a tough one on Weds πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ against that Russian girl Anastasia Potapova... I'm rooting for her tho 😊 she's been through injuries and all that, so she knows what it's like to struggle back from them. Let's hope she can bring some of that experience to the court and take out Potapova 🎾πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” "The biggest risk is not taking any risk..." 🎾

I think Raducanu has a tough road ahead, but she's also shown her ability to adapt and overcome adversity in the past. She knows what it's like to feel rusty after an injury lay-off, and I'm sure she'll be extra careful going into this match against Potapova.

It's also great to see her showing empathy towards Jack Draper, who's returning from a similar injury. With Raducanu's experience in mind, I think Draper's comeback will be more impressive than people might expect 😎

so raducanu is gonna have a tough time vs potapova? she's been through some injuries in 2023 lol, it's like her body was all "nah, let's just take a break" πŸ˜‚. anyway, she's been watching potapova since junior tournaments and knows how talented she is... that's not an easy opponent to prepare for! πŸ€”. raducanu seems really humble about the match too, saying it'll be a "tricky one"... like, yeah, it will be πŸ˜…. i do love how she's backing jack draper though, all about being realistic about his comeback... πŸ‘

So Emma Raducanu just beat a world No 195 player and now she's got her sights on Potapova πŸ€”. According to data from the WTA, Potapova has been on fire this season with a win percentage of 84% in singles matches 😲.

Raducanu knows what it's like to struggle back after injuries (3 Grand Slams missed in 2023), so she's not taking anything for granted πŸ€•. She's gotta be careful, 'cause those powerful serves and groundstrokes can be tough to handle πŸ’ͺ.

If Raducanu wins this match, that'd put her at a 63% win rate on hard courts πŸ“Š. Not bad! But we know Potapova has the skills to give her a run for her money πŸ”₯. The odds say it's gonna be close πŸ‘€.

OMG, I'm so hyped about the Aus Open! Emma Raducanu is gonna go toe-to-toe with Anastasia Potapova and it's gonna be a real nail-biter πŸ€”πŸ’₯! I mean, Raducanu has been through some tough times with injuries, missing 3 GS in 2023... but she's back and ready to take on the best πŸ’ͺ. And can we talk about Potapova's skills? Russian-born Austrian is a force to be reckoned with 😎. It's gonna be a really tricky match, but I'm loving the underdog vibes 🀞. Who do you think will come out on top?

So like, Emma Raducanu is gonna have a tough one against Potapova πŸ€”, but I gotta say, I'm kinda excited to watch this match! 😁 She's been through some stuff with injuries and all, so I feel for her, you know? πŸ€• And she's got experience under her belt, like with Jack Draper and the Davis Cup thingy... πŸ‘

I wonder if she's gonna be able to pull off that win against Potapova? πŸ€” The Russian-born Austrian sounds like a formidable opponent, but Raducanu seems confident and prepared 😊. Maybe it's just a case of her having too much respect for her opponent? πŸ™

It's all about confidence, right? If she can get past that mental block, I think she's got this! πŸ’ͺ Bring on the tennis drama, I'm here for it! 🎾
