Dylan Darling impresses with ‘great moxie’ after Rick Pitino’s late St. John’s lineup switch

Rick Pitino, St. John's men's basketball coach, revealed that he will start Idaho State transfer Dylan Darling alongside Oziyah Sellers against William & Mary. The decision came after an impressive practice session where Darling outshone the team's backup point guards under full-court pressure.

The move was made necessary due to constant turnovers and the inability of the backups to simulate the team's defensive pressure. Pitino has praised Darling for his fearlessness, saying he is "afraid of nothing" and believes he thinks he is the best player on the court.

Darling had just returned from a calf strain that kept him out of practice until Thursday morning's shootaround. The decision to start Darling allowed Sellers to focus on scoring opportunities, as his new point guard found ways to get him open.

Head coach Pitino has emphasized that he looks for the best players regardless of reputation and does not consider who starts based on past performances. He believes all players will contribute, regardless of their starting position.

The win over William & Mary marked St. John's first time scoring 90 or more points in its first three games since the 1971-72 season.

I'm intrigued by Pitino's decision to start Darling alongside Sellers - it's a calculated risk that could pay off, but also raises questions about the development of the backup point guards 🤔. On one hand, having someone who can handle full-court pressure and outshine the backups is a huge asset, especially given St. John's defense. On the other hand, it does raise concerns about the team's depth and ability to adapt when Darling isn't on the court.

I love that Pitino is looking for the best players regardless of reputation, but it also makes me wonder if he's putting too much faith in Darling's abilities - after all, there are no guarantees anyone will continue to perform under pressure 📈. Still, I'm excited to see how this plays out and whether St. John's can sustain this level of performance throughout the season! 👏

🤔 just wondering why it takes a coach to figure out that having someone who can put up points and not mess up turnovers would be a good idea? 🙄 i get that they've been working with the backups, but if one of them is struggling that much, maybe it's time to look elsewhere for some scoring punch... 💸

omg u gotta love how coach pitino is shaking things up with his team 🤯 he saw potential in darling and gave him a shot, and now st john's is on fire 🔥 those turnovers were killing them, but now they got this young gun who's fearless and can take it to the hoop 💪 sellers gets to score more easily, win-win for him too! 👏 coach pitino's all about finding the best talent regardless of rep, that's so refreshing 🌟

🤔 so the coach is saying that he's not worried about what people think, just looking for the player who can bring the best energy to the game. and it's cool that Darling's comeback from injury paid off 🏈, but I wonder how the team will do without their backup point guards making those crucial passes? 💭 also, 90+ points in a win over William & Mary is impressive, but what about the turnovers? didn't they have some issues with that? 🔥

I'm loving how Rick Pitino is giving Dylan Darling a chance to shine 🤩! I mean, it's not just about starting him ahead of Sellers, but also showing that he trusts his player's instincts. "Afraid of nothing" is a pretty good motto for an NBA coach 😂. But seriously, if Darling can bring that confidence and fearlessness to the court, it'll be great for the team. And hey, if Sellers gets more scoring opportunities because of it, win-win! 🏀💪

idk why coaches are so caught up in trying to prove a point by giving a transfer player a chance, like it's not about winning, it's about developing your own talent 🤔🏀 anyway, think pitino is making a legit move here, gotta give props to darling for stepping up and showing he's got skills. but you have to wonder if sellers was ever gonna get that scoring opportunity or if it was just handed to him on a silver platter 🤑 the team needs consistency and a solid starting lineup, hope they can keep this momentum going and not let darlings recent arrival throw off their game 😬

idk how this move is gonna play out 🤔... Pitino is trusting Dylan Darling with a big role, and I think it's kinda bold given that he just came back from an injury 💪. The fact that the backups couldn't handle full-court pressure suggests they might not be ready for that level of intensity... but at the same time, maybe Darling is the spark St. John's needs to elevate their game 🔥. It's interesting to see how this plays out, esp since Pitino says he's looking for players to contribute regardless of position 🤝. Can't wait to see if they can keep up the momentum! ⚫

🤔 I'm telling you, something fishy is going on with this coach Pitino 🙃. This Dylan Darling kid just comes out of nowhere and suddenly he's starting ahead of their backup point guards? 🤯 It's like they're trying to push a new agenda or something... Like, what's the real reason behind this decision? Is it because Darling has some kind of hidden skillset that nobody else sees? Or is it because the coaches just can't see themselves in his shadow? 🤷‍♂️ I mean, I'm all for giving players a chance to shine, but when does it go from being a smart move to looking like a publicity stunt? 📺 And don't even get me started on Pitino's weird praise for Darling - "afraid of nothing"? Sounds like someone trying too hard to spin a narrative 💁‍♂️. I'm watching this one closely, folks... 😏

what's with this guy Pitino?? starts this transfer kid who just got back from injury and you're like "he's fearless" - okay, dude, that's cool, but can he actually play?? 😒 And what about Sellers? He was supposed to be the main man, but now he gets to chill on offense while Darling is doing all the work? 🤔 It seems like Pittino is just trying to create controversy and get attention...

just started to watch some college hoops and i'm loving it so far 🏀👍, but gotta say rick pitino seems like a pretty straight shooter when he says darling is fearless no holds barred lol 💪. not sure if its a good idea to put the ball in his hands though, those turnovers were pretty bad 😬. anyway, st john's is looking sharp so far this season 👏 and idaho state transfer must be doing something right to catch pitino's eye 🤔.

😊 I feel like Dylan Darling is getting a second chance to prove himself and it's awesome that Coach Pitino believes in him enough to start him, even after he was out for a bit with an injury. It's also super cool that Sellers gets to focus on scoring now that Darling is taking some of the pressure off. I love how Coach Pitino emphasizes finding the best players regardless of their past performances - it shows he's all about the team's success, not just individual stars 🙌

man, this is crazy! 🤯 Rick Pitino going with Dylan Darling as the starting point guard? that's a bold move considering Darling just got back from an injury and was basically benched in practice sessions lol. but idk man, if Darling is really "afraid of nothing" like Pitino says, then maybe he can lead this team to something special 😂. and props to the coaching staff for recognizing talent wherever they find it. gotta keep an eye on this one... 📊

omg I'm loving this move by Rick Pitino 🤩 he's really putting his trust in Dylan Darling and it's paying off already! 😍 the fact that Darling can outshine the backup point guards under pressure is insane 🤯 and I love how Pitino praises him for being fearless - it's clear he believes in Darling's abilities 💪. I'm also super impressed by Oziyah Sellers, who gets to focus on scoring opportunities now that Darling is taking the reins 💨. can't wait to see what the rest of the season holds for St John's 🎉

I don't get why they can't just let the backup point guards play a bit more. I mean, I know Darling had an impressive practice session, but it feels like he got given this chance just because he's fresh off injury 🤔. It'd be nice to see some rotation, you know? And what's with Oziyah Sellers getting all these scoring opportunities? Can't the coaches work together on that front? 💡

idk how Pitino does it, always making moves like this 🤯 and people are loving it 💕 but what I find crazy is that Darling outshone those backup point guards in practice 😲 I mean, if he's "afraid of nothing" as Pitino said, why hasn't he been playing sooner? 🤔 and isn't it weird that the team was having turnovers left and right until Darling got back? like what changed? 🤑

idk what's going on with Rick Pitino he starts this Idaho State transfer guy Dylan Darling right off the bat and not even giving sellers a chance to show what he got 🤷‍♂️ like, aren't they playing for the same team? anyway, it sounds like darling is pretty fearless or whatever, but I'm no expert on basketball... can someone explain to me why starting a transfer player who's been injured makes sense? and btw, 90+ points in like one game? that's crazy! 🤑

I'm low-key salty about this one 😒. I think it's a bit much to say that Dylan Darling is "afraid of nothing". It sounds like Pitino is trying too hard to spin his rookie transfer's confidence into something it's not 🤔. Newsflash: being fearless on the court is great, but it doesn't mean you're above criticism or mistakes when they happen.

And while I get that coaches want their players to take risks and make plays, it feels like Pitino is putting all his eggs in Darling's basket too quickly 🔙. What happens if he gets injured again? Or struggles with the pressure of being a starter? It's not ideal, but at least Sellers can focus on scoring without having to worry about turning over the ball 🤷‍♂️.
