DHS vacates Naval Station Great Lakes command center: source

Federal Homeland Security officials have abandoned their command center at Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago, a source has confirmed to the Sun-Times. The move comes as part of a broader shift in priorities for the agency, which has been ramping up its immigration enforcement efforts in other parts of the country.

The department had initially secured the facility two months ago to support "Operation Midway Blitz," a high-profile deportation campaign launched by President Donald Trump in the Chicago area. The command center was intended to serve as a hub for federal agents, providing them with office space, parking and equipment like portable laundry units.

However, the DHS's departure from the facility appears to be part of a larger trend towards de-emphasizing Chicago in recent months. In October, sources revealed that the agency had planned to maintain its presence at the command center through December, but that plan has since been scrapped.

Meanwhile, immigration enforcement activities are surging elsewhere, including in Charlotte, North Carolina's largest city. Over the weekend, U.S. Border Patrol agents were spotted making arrests in multiple locations, sparking concerns about public safety and civil liberties.

"This is a clear example of the administration's priorities โ€“ and I think we can all see that it's not focused on the well-being of American citizens," said Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a statement. "We are surging DHS law enforcement to Charlotte to ensure Americans are safe and public safety threats are removed."

However, local officials have rejected this narrative, with Mayor Vi Lyles and others calling for an end to what they say is unnecessary fear and uncertainty among residents.

"We want people in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to know we stand with all residents who simply want to go about their lives," the statement said. The move reflects a growing divide between federal authorities and local leaders, with some arguing that enforcement efforts are exacerbating tensions rather than addressing root causes of social problems.

๐Ÿค” You gotta wonder what's really driving this shift in priorities for the Homeland Security agency. Is it just about enforcing stricter immigration laws or is there something more sinister at play? ๐Ÿšจ On one hand, we've got local officials trying to reassure residents that they're not afraid of the increased enforcement presence, but on the other hand, isn't it natural to feel uneasy when agents from another branch of government are making arrests in your backyard? ๐ŸŒ† And what about all these 'public safety threats' that need to be removed - who gets to decide that? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ It's a classic case of federal authority trying to assert its dominance over local concerns. Meanwhile, the real victims here are likely those caught in the middle, trying to navigate their lives without getting entangled in all this enforcement drama ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ.

I'm low-key worried about this... ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’” It's like they're leaving Chicago high and dry to focus on other areas ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿšจ Meanwhile, Charlotte is getting a surge of immigration enforcement ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšซ which is already causing anxiety for local residents ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I feel bad for the people living there trying to navigate this ๐Ÿคฏโ€โ™€๏ธ The government's priorities are all over the place ๐Ÿ”„๐Ÿ’ฅ and it's hard to know what's really going on ๐Ÿค Can't we just focus on making America safe and welcoming for everyone ๐ŸŒŽโค๏ธ? ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‘ซ

omg i cant believe this is real ๐Ÿคฏ the fact that they abandoned their command center in chicago because of trump's deportation campaign is wild to think that they were using it to support a high-profile operation and now its just getting scrapped ๐Ÿšฎ idk what's more concerning though, the sudden shift in priorities or the surge of immigration enforcement activities elsewhere like charlotte ๐Ÿค” local officials are trying to spin this as unnecessary fear but i feel like there should be more transparency on how they're planning to address social problems instead of just focusing on deportation efforts ๐Ÿ™„

๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ฅ just saw this news and I'm so done with the way DHS is de-emphasizing Chicago ๐Ÿคฏ they had a command center set up at Naval Station Great Lakes for Operation Midway Blitz, but now it's gone? Meanwhile, immigration enforcement is cranking up in other cities like Charlotte... like what's the point? ๐Ÿ™„

I mean, I get that President Trump wants to deport people, but can't he just focus on actual issues instead of creating more chaos? And what about the morale of federal agents who were working hard at that command center? Do they not count as American citizens? ๐Ÿค”

It's like, yeah, we want public safety and all, but can't we find a way to address root causes without resorting to aggressive enforcement? And what's with the divide between federal authorities and local leaders in Charlotte? It feels like politics as usual ๐Ÿ™ƒ

I'm so worried about the people living in Charlotte right now ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’”. It sounds like they're being caught in the middle of this deportation campaign and it's causing a lot of uncertainty and fear among residents ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. I think we need to support these communities more, not just with words, but also with resources and actions that prioritize their well-being ๐Ÿ‘Š. The fact that local officials are speaking out against this narrative is super inspiring ๐Ÿ™Œ. We should all be supporting our neighbors who are going through this tough time ๐Ÿ’•.

omg this is getting crazy i mean i get it they wanna keep americans safe but whats the point if ppl r just gonna feel scared and uneasy all the time? ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿšจ ugh its like theyre tryna stir up more drama than necessary in charlotte already a city with so much history and culture. cant we just focus on helping ppl not deportin them left & right?! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

I heard they just closed up shop at this command center in Chicago ๐Ÿค”. It's like, what was the point of even having it there in the first place? I mean, I know there's been some drama with the Trump administration and all that, but come on... You'd think they'd want to keep a presence in one of the biggest cities in the country. Instead, they're over here in Charlotte, NC ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ, making arrests and causing a ruckus. It just seems like a big mess to me. And what's with all these "public safety threats" everyone's talking about? I'm not saying there aren't any issues, but can't we focus on finding solutions rather than just chasing after people who might be doing something wrong? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜’ just great another example of the government screwing up the system, abandoning a command center in Chicago right after they were using it to deport people... what's the point of even having a law enforcement agency if you're not gonna enforce the laws? and now they're sending all their agents to Charlotte like that's where all the problems are... meanwhile the city is trying to tell us that we're just being blown outta proportion, but I think it's pretty clear that they're using this as some kind of excuse to increase surveillance and control... ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I donโ€™t usually comment but... can someone explain to me why they're moving this command center from Chicago to North Carolina? ๐Ÿค” I mean, I get it, they want to focus on other areas, but seems like a pretty big deal to just up and leave in the middle of Operation Midway Blitz. Did they really need to abandon ship like that? ๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™€๏ธ And what's with all these arrests over the weekend? I'm sure there are people who think it's good for public safety, but doesn't that just create more fear and anxiety among residents? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Can we just talk about how this whole thing is affecting everyday people instead of just politicians making statements? ๐Ÿ’ฌ
