Danish prime minister says a US takeover of Greenland would mark the end of NATO

Mette Frederiksen, Denmark's Prime Minister, has escalated her warning to US President Donald Trump that a takeover of Greenland would be catastrophic and mark the end of NATO, after the US president renewed his calls for US control over the strategic island in the aftermath of a weekend military operation in Venezuela.

The Danish leader made her comments on Monday, following an operation by US forces in Caracas to capture Venezuelan leader NicolΓ‘s Maduro and his wife. The move has heightened concerns in Denmark and Greenland, which is a semiautonomous territory of the Danish kingdom and thus part of NATO.

Frederiksen told Danish broadcaster TV2 that if the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, "then everything stops." She also warned that the US's repeated calls for control over Greenland are a serious threat to the security provided by NATO since the end of World War II.

Greenlandic counterpart Jens Frederik Nielsen also warned that an American takeover would be catastrophic and that Greenland could not be compared to Venezuela. He urged his constituents to stay calm and united, saying "we will not accept a situation where we and Greenland are threatened in this way."

The US operates the remote Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland, which supports missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance operations for the US and NATO. However, Danish Ambassador Jesper Mller Srensen has responded to criticism that Denmark is ceding sovereignty by pointing out that the partnership between the US and Denmark has been long-lasting.

Critics say however that recent legislation allowing US troops to operate on Danish soil widens a previous military agreement made with the Biden administration and effectively cedes Danish sovereignty.

I'm still shaking my head about this whole Greenland situation 🀯. I mean, I get it, national security and all that, but Mette Frederiksen's warning to Trump is not just about Greenland, it's about the entire NATO alliance 🌐. If the US thinks they can just muscle in on our friends' sovereignty, they're messing with a whole different ball game πŸ’₯.

And I gotta say, I'm all for Denmark having its own space base in Pituffik, but come on, guys! We're not trying to be the US's lapdogs 🐢. It's like, we get it, we have a long history of cooperation, but that doesn't mean we have to let our guard down.

I'm also curious about what Greenlandic Jens Frederik Nielsen was thinking when he said Greenland can't be compared to Venezuela πŸ€”. I mean, sure, Venezuela has its own set of problems, but it's not like the US is going to take over Greenland and start selling our ice caps on eBay ❄️. No way, no how! πŸ˜‚

Ugh, I'm getting all nostalgic thinking about this... it feels like we're back in the Cold War era again πŸ˜”. Remember when the world was so divided and nuclear threats were real? It's crazy to think that a US takeover of Greenland could be seen as catastrophic, but then again, we have to consider the whole history of NATO and how it came to be 🀯. I mean, I get why Mette Frederiksen is warning Trump, but at the same time, I'm worried about Denmark ceding sovereignty like that... it's all so unsettling 😬. And what about the Pituffik Space Base? It feels like we're playing a game of military one-upmanship πŸš€. I just hope we can find some common ground and not go down this road again 🀞.

I'm low-key worried about what's going on in Greenland 🌎😬. I mean, Mette Frederiksen is totally right, if the US starts taking control of Greenland, it's like they're saying they can do whatever they want and disregard NATO agreements since 1945 πŸ‘Š. It's not just about Greenland, it's about the precedent we set for other countries to follow.

And let's be real, if Trump wants to test the waters, he should probably think twice about how his actions would affect Denmark too πŸ€”. We're already dealing with our own climate crisis and rising nationalism, the last thing we need is a global superpower making moves that could destabilize the entire region πŸ’₯.

I'm curious though, what's behind these US calls for control over Greenland again? Is it just about expanding their military presence or is there something else at play πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ? Either way, I think Frederiksen and Jens Frederik Nielsen are onto something – we need to be vigilant about our sovereignty and security as a global community πŸ’ͺ.

omg, can we talk about this Greenland takeover thing already? 🀯 i mean, Mette Frederiksen's warnings make total sense, right? NATO is not just some old Cold War relic – it's a solid security system that's been keeping us safe for decades. and what's the US even hoping to gain from controlling Greenland, eh? πŸ€” some fancy space base or whatever?

and can we please talk about how Denmark is being portrayed here? like, they're not just some passive bystanders waiting to be bullied by the US. Danish Ambassador Jesper Mller Srensen is totally right when he points out that this partnership with the US has been going on for ages – but at what cost? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

anyway, i'm all for being cautious and stuff, but can we also acknowledge that this is just another example of how geopolitics gets so complicated? 🌐 like, who even knows what's really going on in Venezuela anymore? πŸ˜‚

I gotta say, this whole Greenland thing is getting crazy fast 🀯. I mean, Mette Frederiksen is like "stop messing around, Donald" but at the same time Denmark's got its own beefs with the US on their soil. It's all about who gets to control what and when. And let's be real, NATO's not as strong as it used to be πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. If the US is gonna attack another country, they better have a solid plan or else everyone's gonna be like "peace out" πŸ’₯. And Greenland? It's like, if you're gonna take over someone else's turf, at least know what you're getting into πŸ˜…. All this drama and nobody's talking about the real issue - what does it all mean for Denmark and Greenland in the long run πŸ€”?

I don't usually comment but... have you guys seen this? Like, I'm totally calm about it but Denmark's PM is basically saying that if the US tries to take over Greenland, it'll be game over for NATO 🀯. And honestly, who can blame her? I mean, Greenland is part of the Danish kingdom and NATO, so like, it's already a pretty big deal. And now the US is making these calls again after some weird operation in Venezuela... πŸ€”

I don't know about you guys but this whole thing just feels kinda sketchy 🚨. Like, what's up with the US wanting to control Greenland? Is it like, because of some secret space base or something? πŸš€ And Denmark is all like "we're not having it" which I think is super reasonable 😊.

I don't know if anyone else has seen this but I'm kinda curious about what's going on... are we gonna see some kind of confrontation between the US and Denmark over Greenland? πŸ€”πŸ‘€

can you believe what's happening?! 🀯 mette frederiksen is like "if us attacks another nato country, then everything stops" lol like who else is gonna save us? πŸ™„ and jens frederik nielsen just told his people to stay calm but like, how can we stay calm when our country's being threatened?? 😩 greenland is literally next to denmark and if the US takes over, it's like nato just failed. πŸš«πŸ‘Ž

oh man, this is some scary stuff 🀯... like, i get why Mette Frederiksen is warning Trump, but can't he just chill? πŸ˜’ all these threats and warnings are super stressful for people who care about NATO and Denmark's security πŸ’• the fact that Jens Frederik Nielsen is telling his constituents to stay calm might not be enough to ease their minds 🀞 it's like, we get that Greenland and Denmark have a special relationship with the US, but c'mon, let's talk about this stuff like adults πŸ‘₯ instead of making empty threats or trying to downplay everything πŸ˜’
