A Major Road Closes This Thursday Due to Ongoing Construction Project.
The Columbus Boulevard ramp connecting to Interstate 95 near Penn's Landing will be sealed off starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday as part of an ambitious construction project aimed at building a park and pedestrian pathway over the highway between Chestnut and Walnut streets.
The closure, set to take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., will have a ripple effect on traffic in the area. To get onto I-95 North, drivers will need to head north on Columbus Boulevard and use an alternative ramp located at Summer Street before merging back into the highway.
Meanwhile, commuters attempting to reach Interstate 676 East can take a detour by turning left onto Callowhill Street, then left onto Sixth Street, and finally accessing a new entry point for the interstate. Travelers bound for I-676-West will have to follow an even more circuitous route, taking Callowhill Street once, then turning left onto Eighth Street before joining the on-ramp.
The delay is expected to be frustrating, with drivers advised to allow extra time when traveling in the area. The 511 website and social media channels can provide up-to-date information on traffic congestion.
At stake is a $329 million project spearheaded by PennDOT that promises to bring a new park and public space to the area once completed β slated for completion by 2029. Construction delays have been persistent, with earlier this year's installation of steel 'beans' used to support the cap being an example.
