Collina in favour of VAR rulings on corners at World Cup as long as there is 'no delay'

FIFA Referee Chief Backs VAR for Corners, But Warns Against Delay

Pierluigi Collina, chair of FIFA's referees committee, has expressed his support for using video assistant referee (VAR) technology to determine whether corners are correctly awarded at the World Cup next year. However, he emphasized that any such system must minimize delays to maintain the integrity of the game.

Collina pointed out that VAR can assess key corner-related decisions, such as determining whether the ball has fully crossed the line or which team last touched it. He acknowledged that one major challenge is reducing potential delay, particularly with corners where a 10-15 second pause typically occurs before the kick is taken.

"We should all strive to make correct decisions on the field of play," Collina stated. "It's disappointing if a competition's outcome hinges on an honest mistake made by the referee." He attributed his support for VAR in corner cases to this concern, highlighting that it would be undesirable for game outcomes to depend on such errors.

Collina emphasized that any VAR system must avoid introducing additional delays. He reasoned that even with the technology, it's challenging for referees to spot incorrect decisions during a corner kick within the limited timeframe available before play resumes.

While Collina acknowledged potential benefits from using AI-based innovations in other areas, his primary focus is on minimizing delay and ensuring accurate decision-making in high-stakes competitions like the World Cup.

🤩 I'm all about that VAR life! I mean, can you imagine if corners were decided by a single ref's judgment? So much drama! 💥 But for real, Pierluigi Collina is right on point with his concerns about delays. 10-15 seconds is nothing compared to the thrill of the game 🏆👍. AI innovations are cool and all, but let's keep it real – accuracy over speed any day ⏱️!

I think its about time FIFA gets VAR sorted out for corners 🤦‍♂️, especially considering how often those decisions can go against teams. It's frustrating when you're watching a game and it feels like the ref made a mistake, but then you find out they were right all along 😒. But I get where Collina is coming from - delays can be a real killer, especially in high-pressure games. If they can figure out a way to make VAR work quickly and accurately, that's a big plus 🤝. And honestly, who doesn't want to trust the refs more? 👏

I'm down with VAR for corners at the World Cup 🤝 but gotta say, I'm worried about the delay factor... 10-15 seconds just seems too long to pause the game ⏱️. Can't they find a way to reduce that time or make the system more efficient? It's all about the flow of the game, you know? And what if VAR is right but it takes ages to figure out which team last touched the ball? 🤯 Wouldn't that be frustrating for the teams and fans? Maybe they should just trust the refs on this one... or find a way to make VAR more lightning-quick 💻.

I THINK IT'S A NO-BRAINER THAT VAR SHOULD BE USED FOR CORNERS!!! IT WOULD REDUCE THE NUMBER OF DISPUTED DECISIONS AND MAKE THE GAME MORE PRECISE! BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I GET WHY PIERLUIGI COLLINA IS CAUTIOUS ABOUT DELAYS - IT COULD RUIN THE FLOW OF THE GAME 🤦‍♂️. IMHO, THEY SHOULD FIND A WAY TO BALANCE ACCURACY WITH TIMING. MAYBE THERE'S A BETTER WAY TO IMPLEMENT IT SO IT DOESN'T SLOW DOWN THE GAME TOO MUCH 😊

I'm all for totally abolishing corners altogether 😂🤣 can you imagine a game without them? It'd be way more exciting with no risk of the ball going out of bounds or the other team getting lucky on a rebound! The delay thing is overrated, let's just make it up as we go along and see what happens! Who needs rules anyway? 🤷‍♂️

idk why they need so much tech for corners lol. can't we just trust the refs to get it right? i mean, what's 10-15 secs of delay really gonna change? but at the same time, if there's a clear mistake and its affecting the game... maybe var is worth it? but honestly, i'd rather watch paint dry than wait for that corner kick lol 😂💤. btw, has anyone tried those new energy drinks? they claim to give you wings 🍿👀
