Article 1: Ice Swimming in Lake Michigan

Chicago braced against some of the coldest wind chills of the season this weekend, forcing many to remain indoors.

But George “Iceberg” Miller and a small group of friends did the opposite. They plunged into Lake Michigan — a dangerous pastime not recommended by city officials.

A California native who used to hate the cold, Miller has been jumping in the lake every day this winter. What started at the recommendation of a yoga instructor has become an opportunity for Miller and his wife, Jesy Grose, to meet new people. Motivated by the subzero temperatures, Miller said he wanted to change the way people in Chicago think about winter.

“Everybody complains about Chicago winters ... Things close down,” said Miller, who lives in Rogers Park. “I want Chicago to be a destination place in the wintertime.”

On Sunday, as the city was under a winter storm warning that brought several inches of snow, Miller and his wife were joined by Hayley Kimbrueh and Tom Ashman as they ran into the lake at Oak Street Beach. The group played in the water for 15 minutes while the air temperature was 18 degrees with a windchill of 5 degrees.

When Miller and his crew reached the 15-minute mark, they climbed out and headed to a nearby sauna to warm up.

I'm loving this crazy Chicago vibe right now 🤣. So, you gotta wonder what's behind George "Iceberg" Miller's decision to take an icy dip in Lake Michigan every day this winter 🥶. At first glance, it sounds like a recipe for disaster, and I mean that literally - hypothermia is no joke, folks! 😬

But here's the thing: Miller wants Chicago to be seen as a destination place during the wintertime, not just a pit stop where people rush in and out when it gets cold. And by taking the plunge (pun intended), he's trying to change that narrative. It's like he's saying, "Hey, winter is cool too!" 🎅

Of course, there are safer ways to enjoy the winter season, like hitting up one of Chicago's many museums or indoor ice skating rinks. But for Miller and his friends, the thrill of the icy dip is worth the risk - at least, that's what they're telling themselves 😜.

I've got to hand it to Miller and his crew, though: they're definitely making a splash (okay, I'll stop with the puns now). The fact that they've found a way to have fun in the freezing temperatures is something to be celebrated. And who knows? Maybe one day, Lake Michigan will be the go-to spot for winter warriors 🤘.

Anyway, that's my two cents on this story. What do you guys think - are you brave enough to take an icy dip in Lake Michigan? 🤔

I'm like, totally confused... or am I? 🤔 So, George "Iceberg" Miller is trying to break the stereotype that Chicagoans hate winter, but isn't he just, like, crazy for jumping into Lake Michigan in subzero temps? 😂 And what's up with people saying it's a great way to meet new friends? Isn't it kinda scary and reckless? 🤷‍♀️ I mean, if you're gonna do something that dares the city officials to say "don't do it", shouldn't there be some warning signs or guidelines? 🚨

omg have you guys ever taken a polar plunge like Iceberg George? i mean, 18 degrees is crazy! but at the same time, it's kinda cool that he's breaking the ice (get it?) in chicago and making people think winter can be awesome. not saying i'd do it myself, lol... been to chicago winters enough to know those temps are no joke

🤔 its pretty cool that george miller is trying to change people's minds about chicago winters, like he says winter should be a destination place. idk if its just for him or his wife but its good to have some adventure in the cold weather. also i wonder what kinda person just jumps into lake michigan on a sunday without checking the temperature first 😂

I love how George Miller is trying to change people's perception about winters in Chicago... like, I get it dude, you want to brave the cold and show everyone that it can be a cool (get it? cool?) thing to do 🤣. But at the same time, I think he should probably talk to the city officials and come up with a safer way for people to do this kind of stuff without risking their lives... just saying 💦

ice swimming in lake michigan is literally insane 💦🤯, i mean who tries ice swimming in -5 degrees wind chill? but at the same time, george "iceberg" miller's whole thing about turning chicago into a wintertime destination is kinda cool 🌟. i guess it's all about finding new ways to experience and appreciate winter instead of just hating on it 🤔.

I think this is so cool! George Miller's idea to do a daily polar plunge in Lake Michigan when it's freezing outside is amazing 💦🏊‍♂️! I mean, who needs a spa day when you can just jump into icy waters with your friends? 😄 It's all about taking control of your own happiness and making the most of winter. Plus, he's raising awareness for people to think differently about winter in Chicago - let's make it a destination place to enjoy! 🌟

I gotta ask, what's up with people like George "Iceberg" Miller who are just gonna voluntarily freeze their butts off in Lake Michigan? It's like they're trying to make a statement about Chicago winters being harsh, but aren't they just putting themselves at risk? 🤔 I mean, isn't that kinda like politicians who propose austerity measures without considering the human impact? You gotta think about the consequences of your actions. 😒

The phenomenon of ice swimming in Lake Michigan has piqued my interest, particularly considering the subzero temperatures and windchill warnings 🤔. While it's intriguing to see individuals like George "Iceberg" Miller take the plunge (pun intended), I'm concerned about the safety implications and potential health risks associated with such activities ❄️.

From a sociological standpoint, it's fascinating to observe how this activity has become an opportunity for Miller and his friends to connect with others who share similar interests. It highlights the human desire to push boundaries and challenge norms, which can be a powerful catalyst for social change 🌈.

However, I do wonder if this trend will lead to increased awareness about winter safety and mental health in Chicago's residents, or if it will simply become a fringe activity relegated to die-hard enthusiasts like Miller 💦.

I'm so done with these crazy Chicago winters 💁‍♀️! Like, George "Iceberg" Miller and his friends are literally swimming in Lake Michigan at 18 degrees Fahrenheit? 🤣 That's just nuts! I don't get why they wouldn't want to stay indoors where it's warm and cozy 😌. But hey, if it brings people together and motivates them to change the way we think about winter, then more power to 'em 💪. It's definitely a conversation starter... whether you're into it or not 🤔!

🤗 oh man, can you imagine doing a polar plunge in lake michigan when it's like, freezing outside? i would be totally nervous but also kinda curious... like how cold is it really? and what if u get hypothermia or something 😬. but at the same time, if u do it with friends and u're all motivated by the weather, that could be kinda fun! 🤝 i guess it's good that people are out there doing weird stuff to challenge themselves and have some fun in the process... keep being adventurous, george "iceberg" miller 🌊

omg u gotta love ppl who r brave enough 2 take ice plunge in lake michigan!!1! i mean its crazy cold out there, 18 degrees w/ a windchill of 5?! but george "iceberg" miller & his crew r all about spreading winter cheer 🎄🏊‍♂️ & making chicago the destination place 2 be in wintertime. that's so cool! u know what would take it 2 the next level tho? if they did an ice plunge challenge with a charity twist!!! would be amazing 💖

ice swimming in lake michigan is either crazy or genius 🤣 who needs yoga when you can just jump into freezing cold water, right? sounds like george "iceberg" miller has found a way to chill out (literally) and meet new people too! btw, what's next, ice skating on the danube river in berlin? 🥶

omg can you believe people doing polar plunges in lake michigan like who does that?? 😂❄️ i guess its a thing now and some ppl actually think its fun? idk about that but kudos to george "iceberg" miller for spreading positivity and showing everyone that winter isnt all bad 🤗🏊‍♂️

I love how some people in Chicago are embracing the crazy cold weather, like George "Iceberg" Miller and his crew, and doing a polar plunge every day! 🤩 But at the same time, I think it's also super irresponsible of him to be jumping into icy Lake Michigan when everyone else is stuck inside. 😬 I mean, what if he gets hypothermia or something?! 🚑

On the other hand, I kind of admire his determination to change people's perceptions of winter in Chicago... maybe that's actually a great idea? 🤔 If more people started embracing the chill, it could make winters more interesting and fun! ❄️ But then again, some people might just freeze to death because of it... 😂

I don't know about this ice swimming thing, it's crazy! I mean, 18 degrees with a windchill of 5 degrees? That sounds like freezing your butt off for me, but hey, if you want to go for it, that's your prerogative 🤔... wait, no, actually, I think it's pretty stupid. I mean, what's wrong with people these days and all this crazy stuff they're doing just for the sake of being different? But at the same time, I guess if you're into that sorta thing, go for it, dude! You do you... but still, I don't get why anyone would voluntarily want to put themselves through that.

just had to scroll through this weekend's news and i'm loving george "iceberg" miller's vibes 🤙♂️ he's totally crushing those chicago winters with his daily lake michigan plunges, and honestly, it's kinda inspiring... who wouldn't want to take a dip in the ice when you're stuck inside shivering? but what really got me was george's goal to change how people think about chicago winters. like, can't we just own those cold temps instead of complaining about them? 💡 maybe miller and his crew are onto something here...

I mean, can you imagine anyone doing an icy dip in Lake Michigan when it's -15 degrees outside? That's just crazy talk! 😂 George "Iceberg" Miller and his friends are literally defying the odds here. They're like the superhero version of people who live in Chicago.

But what I think is really cool about this whole thing is that Miller wants to change the way people think about winter in Chicago. He's all about making Chicago a destination place in the wintertime, and by doing something like this, he's definitely getting attention. I mean, who wouldn't want to go ice swimming when they hear about it? It's just so... bold.

And you know what's even more awesome? The fact that people are actually doing this without getting frostbite or hypothermia! Miller and his friends must be like the winter warriors or something. They're taking on Lake Michigan like it's nobody's business, and I have to admire their dedication (and maybe a little bit of crazy).
