By the end of January, over 80% of Philly's libraries will be open on Saturdays

Philadelphia's Free Library to Offer Weekend Hours at Over Eighty Percent of Branches by January End.

By the end of January, more than 80% of Philadelphia's libraries will be open on Saturdays, offering storytimes, books and community resources to patrons. The increase in weekend hours is part of a plan to extend library services beyond weekday limits.

In recent months, several branches have begun or resumed Saturday operations. The Bushrod Library has been open on Saturdays since at least December, while the Paschalville Library opened its doors to the public on December 20. Additionally, the Wyoming Library will add Saturday hours starting January 24. The Falls of Schuylkill and Torresdale libraries had previously resumed weekend hours in October and November.

The Free Library's president and director, Kelly Richards, expressed pride in continuing to serve the community with these expanded services. "By providing additional resources and workspace for students, families, and job seekers," Richards said, "we look forward to supporting our neighbors who rely on us."

Originally, the library had plans to have all 54 branches open by the end of the year, thanks to funding included in Mayor Cherelle Parker's 2025 budget. However, the statement did not provide a specific timeline for opening the remaining branches.

The Free Library has faced challenges in recent years due to budget cuts and closures during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the introduction of additional weekend hours, library officials hope to better serve their community. By February, the library plans to release a strategic plan outlining its future operations based on feedback from a public survey and town hall meetings held this summer.

In 2018, the library system first cut Saturday hours due to budget constraints, and by 2020, all branches had ceased operations for Saturdays during the pandemic. Weekday hours resumed in 2020 and 2021 but remained closed on weekends until recently.

πŸ€” idk about this one... more weekend hours at libraries might just be a fad πŸ“šπŸ’Ό people are always looking for something to do on saturdays and it's not like they can't find other things to do, like going out or hanging with friends πŸ‘«. and what's the point of having all 54 branches open by december if some aren't gonna make it till then? seems like a big hassle 🀯. plus, libraries are already pretty convenient so why do we need them on weekends too? just wondering if this is more of a publicity stunt to get people excited for new books or whatever πŸ“–πŸ˜’

Man I'm so stoked about this news 🀩! More libraries opening on Saturdays is a huge win for people with busy schedules or just wanna get some reading done without having to worry about school/work stuff πŸ“šπŸ’Ό. I mean, who doesn't love having access to books and community resources 5 days a week? It's about time they got back to normal hours after all those pandemic closures πŸ˜’.

I'm also loving the fact that they're listening to feedback from the community to create this strategic plan 🀝. It's always important for libraries to stay connected with their patrons, you know? And I gotta say, Kelly Richards sounds like a total rockstar πŸ‘ for pushing for these changes and keeping the spirit of the library alive πŸ’–.

It's crazy to think about how far we've come since they first cut Saturday hours back in 2018 πŸ•°οΈ. We're getting closer to that original goal of all branches being open on Saturdays by the end of the year - fingers crossed! πŸ’ͺ

omg thats so cool 🀩 they're finally opening up more branchs on saturdays!!! i mean its about time we get to hang out at the library without havin to plan our whole day arround it now that theres gonna be all these events and workshops its like a whole new experience πŸ“šπŸ‘₯ cant wait to check out the new books and resources they got comin up!

πŸ€” So I'm thinking, if more than 80% of Philly's libraries are gonna be open on Saturdays by Jan end, that's like, a big deal for families and students! πŸ‘ͺπŸ“š I mean, who doesn't love having access to books and resources all day? πŸ“– It's great that the library is trying to give back to the community. πŸ’– But, you know, it's also good that they're making sure everything works out before opening all the branches... seems like a smart move 😊

πŸ“šπŸ’‘ just so hyped about philly's free library adding saturday hours πŸ•°οΈ! more books & community resources? yes please! 🀩 i've been to those sunday storytimes at the bushrod library and they're always lit πŸ”₯. it's about time our libraries became a hub for families, students & job seekers πŸ“šπŸ’Ό. can't wait to see what new programs they have in store πŸ’–

omg u guys!! 🀩 i'm so stoked about this news! philly's free library is about to level up their game by having most of their branches open on saturdays by january end! it's like, finally some freedom for bookworms and fams who wanna get their read on or study hard πŸ˜‚. and can u believe they've been doing it since dec?! i know the struggles library faced during covid πŸ€• but it's awesome to see them bounce back stronger πŸ’ͺ. now let's get hyped about all the community events, resources, and workspace they'll be offering! πŸŽ‰

I think its kinda cool that Philly libraries are startin' to come back online πŸ“šπŸ‘. I mean, who doesn't love havin a place to chill out on the weekend? Its all about lookin at it like this: how can we make our community better, and if that means bein open more, then thats what we gotta do πŸ’‘. And its not just about the hours, its about makin sure people got access to books, resources, and a place to hang out...its like, how do you wanna live life? Do you wanna feel like your options are limited or do you wanna take advantage of everythin you got?

I'm so stoked about this news 😊! More libraries opening on Saturdays is a total win for families and students who wanna hang out there and learn some new stuff. I mean, it's already hard to find places that are open on weekends, let alone ones with free resources and activities. This is exactly what the community needs - more options and support.

I'm all for libraries being a hub for community events too πŸŽ‰. It's not just about books and studying; it's about creating spaces where people can come together and feel connected. And I love that they're listening to feedback from the public and planning a strategic plan to improve their services - it shows they care about what matters most to the people who use them.

Let's keep spreading the word and support these changes 🀩! More libraries on Saturdays would mean more opportunities for everyone, especially those with busy schedules. Bring it on, Philly Library team πŸ’ͺ!

omg that's so cool 🀩 they're finally gonna be open on saturdays at most of the branches i've been to the ones thats always got a chill vibe like the bushrod library and it'll be awesome to have more options for ppl who wanna hang out there during the wkend maybe ill start goin more often lol

πŸš¨πŸ’” another good thing to ruin our lives... apparently philly's free library is gonna be open saturdays at like 80% of its branches by january end 🀯 can't wait to have more distractions from my doomscrolling routine 😴 meanwhile, the world keeps spinning outta control πŸŒŽπŸš€

I think its gonna be awesome to see more community events at libraries on Sat afternoons 🀩. People can study or just chill with their kids while also getting access to free resources for job seekers, etc. Its about time we see a change from when they cut weekend hours back in 2020 πŸ™„. Now we gotta see how it pans out and if its more than just a small group of branches that gets extended hours...

🀩 I'm loving this news! More libraries open on Sat is a win for families & students who can't always get to school or study spaces during weekdays πŸ“šπŸ’‘. It's about time we prioritize community resources & not just weekday hours πŸ•°οΈ. The Free Library's plan is a step in the right direction, but let's see how they implement this strategic plan by Feb and if they'll be able to serve everyone who needs it 🀞. I also wonder what other changes might come from that public survey... maybe we'll finally get some more funding for our libraries? πŸ’Έ

😐 i think its cool that they're trying to make libraries more accessible but what's with the plans being kinda vague? like, when r the last 14 branches gonna open? πŸ€” also dont get me wrong, more weekend hours sounds awesome for students and fams looking 4 some quiet space or a community resource, but im worried bout the financials... did they really find more funding in the mayor's budget? πŸ’Έ
