Apple Pulls China’s Top Gay Dating Apps After Government Order

"Apple Removes Gay Dating Apps From China's App Store, Latest Blow to LGBTQ+ Community"

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the global LGBTQ+ community, tech giant Apple has removed two of China's most popular gay dating apps, Blued and Finka, from the country's app stores. The decision comes after receiving an order from China's main internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China.

Blued, which boasts over 49 million registered users, was available in China but not in other countries for some time. Its international version, HeeSay, remains available in app stores. Finka, on the other hand, was removed from storefronts outside of China earlier this year.

The move is a significant setback for China's marginalized LGBTQ+ community, which has faced increasing pressure under the Chinese Communist Party's tightening control over civil society and free expression. The country decriminalized homosexuality in the 1990s but does not recognize same-sex marriage.

Several prominent gay rights organizations in China have shut down, and social media companies frequently censor LGBTQ+ content and accounts. In 2022, international dating app Grindr was removed from Apple's Chinese App Store.

The reason for the removal of Blued and Finka is not clear. However, it is a stark reminder that even tech giants are not immune to government pressure in China. The apps' owners, BlueCity and Newborn Town, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This move may be seen as a temporary measure or a permanent restriction, but one thing is certain - the LGBTQ+ community in China faces an increasingly hostile environment. As the Chinese government tightens its grip on civil society, it's becoming harder for marginalized groups to express themselves freely.

The case of Blued and Finka highlights the complex relationship between technology, politics, and human rights. While tech companies strive to provide a platform for diverse voices, they often find themselves caught in the crossfire of governments who seek to control online content.

For now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for these apps and their users in China. One thing is certain - this move will have far-reaching implications for the LGBTQ+ community and the global tech industry at large.

🤔 omg i cant even believe whats going on with china and gay dating apps... like how can they just remove them from the app store? 📱 does that mean ppl in china can't meet anyone online anymore? 😩 i feel so bad for those guys and girls who are trying to be themselves but have to hide it because of the government. 🤷‍♀️ isnt tech supposed to be all about freedom and stuff? 🚫 anyway, this makes me wanna boycott Apple or something... idk lol

omg, this is so concerning 🤕... i mean, china's already a nightmare for anyone who speaks out or tries to express themselves differently, and now apple just removed these apps without even giving them a chance? it's like they're just handing over control to the government 😳. what's next, will other companies follow suit? and what about the people who are already struggling to find their place in china? this move is basically telling them that their identities are non-existent 🤯. i'm all for free speech and human rights, but it seems like tech giants are getting caught up in the middle of a much bigger fight 💥.

🤕 This is super bad news for the LGBTQ+ community in China! I mean, they're already struggling with being open about who they are, and now these apps are gone too? It's like, how can they even be expected to live their lives freely when they don't have a platform to connect with each other? 🤝 And it's not just the apps themselves, it's the message that Apple is sending by censoring them. Like, aren't they supposed to be for everyone, you know? 🌈

🤕 Apples gotta play by China's rules lol? Like what's next, removing Google from China too? 🙄 And those gay dating apps, I mean who even uses them in a country where they're basically forced to hide their true selves anyway? 🤷‍♂️ It's like the tech companies are just enabling the gov't's oppression. And don't even get me started on the users, they're just gonna find a way around this, but still... 😒

can you believe apple just caved under china's pressure like that 🤯 its not just about blued & finka tho, its about all the other gay apps being silenced too 🚫 and what really gets me is how china can literally shut down entire organizations for speaking out against human rights but tech companies are all like "oh well, gov't asked us to" 🙄 meanwhile the rest of the world is over here celebrating diversity & inclusivity 💖

I'm really worried about this 🤕. I mean, Apple's one of the biggest platforms out there, and they just cave to China's pressure? It's like, what's next? Removing all the other LGBTQ+ apps too? 😱 The fact that Blued and Finka are still available internationally is just a slap in the face - it's like, "Hey, we're willing to compromise our users' freedom for your sake, China?" 🙄 And it's not like they even had any major issues with the apps... it's just another way for the government to silence voices that don't agree with them. The whole thing feels really toxic, you know? 💔

😱💔 I'm literally shocked by Apple's decision to remove Blued and Finka from China's app stores! Like, what even is going on over there? 😕 The thought of these apps being inaccessible to people who need a safe space to connect with others is just heartbreaking 🤷‍♀️. It's like the Chinese government is sending a super clear message that LGBTQ+ individuals don't have the right to exist freely online 🚫. And honestly, it's not just Apple that's to blame - it's the entire tech industry for enabling this kind of censorship 🔒. We need to be more vocal about supporting our queer friends and allies in China! 🌈💖

🤕 Can't believe Apple just caved to China's pressure 🙅‍♂️. I mean, I get it, business is business, but this is a huge blow to the LGBTQ+ community in China 🌈. It's like, they're already living in fear of being harassed or arrested for who they are... and now you take away their ability to find each other online 💔? Finka was removed from international stores already... what's next? Removing it entirely? 😩 And don't even get me started on the whole "cybersecurity" thing 🤖. Like, China can just censor whatever it wants and we're supposed to be okay with that? 🙄 This is a classic case of governments controlling tech companies... it's like they think they own the internet or something 📊💻. Apple needs to stand up for its users' rights here... or else we'll just have to look elsewhere for our dating apps 😐

omg like i was just talking to my bestie who's gay and lives in china 🤯 and she's literally freaking out right now! her boyfriend of 5 yrs was trying to plan a trip with his friends but cant because he cant even be open about it on dating apps anymore 😩 it's so sad what the chinese government is doing to the lgbtq+ community. like, they decriminalized homosexuality in the 90s but thats not gonna cut it anymore 🤷‍♀️ and now these tech companies are just being super chill with the gov't and removing apps from china 🙅‍♂️ its like, where do their values go? 😔

you know what's wild? I just tried that new plant-based milk at starbucks and it's actually pretty good 🤪 i mean, who needs real milk when you can have almond or oat milk, right? anyway, back to china... i feel so bad for those guys, like they're living in a fishbowl over there. have you guys ever tried that new anime show "spiral" it's so good! 📺 the way they explore themes of identity and community is really thought-provoking. I'm getting all sorts of feels just thinking about it 😭

🤕 this is like something straight out of a dystopian novel... I'm literally shaking with anger 😡, but what can we do? The Chinese government is just getting more aggressive in silencing marginalized voices 🗣️. Apple needs to think twice before complying with their demands, especially since they're supposed to be a champion of free speech 🤖. It's not like Grindr was just some random app, it was a community 🌈, and now those people are being forced into hiding 🕵️‍♀️. I'm worried about the future of LGBTQ+ rights in China 🚫, it's like they're taking two steps forward and one step back 🔄. The irony is that these apps were promoting acceptance and inclusivity 💖, but I guess that's not what the Chinese government wants 🤷‍♂️. We need to stay vigilant and support each other during times like these 💪!

omg this is sooo unfair 😱🏳️‍🌈 i cant believe apple would do something like this to the lgbtq+ community in china it's like they're being silenced again 🗣️ and what about the people who are already struggling with their identity? this move is gonna affect so many lives 💔 i just hope there's someone out there fighting for them because right now it feels like no one's got their backs 😕

😒 I'm so sick of tech giants bowing down to governments just because they want to avoid a temporary ban or fine. I mean, come on, Apple knows what's going on in China, but they still choose to remove those gay dating apps. It's like they're trying to save face instead of standing up for the users' right to free expression. What's next, will they remove Google Maps from China too? 🗺️ And what about Facebook and Twitter? Will they follow suit? I'm getting so frustrated with all these tech giants being so spineless when it comes to defending human rights. It's just not cool, Apple 😒

I'm seeing this news and I gotta say, it's a super worrying sign for the LGBTQ+ community in China 🤕👎. Apple removing Blued and Finka from China's app stores is like, a clear example of how governments are always trying to control what we can access online. It's not just about censorship, but also about silencing marginalized voices 👊.

I mean, think about it - if tech companies like Apple can't even stand up for LGBTQ+ rights in China, what hope do these communities have? 🤔 The fact that Grindr was removed from Apple's Chinese App Store already shows how far-reaching this control is. Now, with Blued and Finka gone, it's like the internet is being pulled back under the rug again 🔍.

This move is also a reminder that technology can't be completely separate from politics 🤝. As soon as tech companies start to push back against government pressure, they get pulled in 🔄. And for the LGBTQ+ community in China, this is a constant battle they're fighting every day 💪.

I'm kinda worried about this Apple decision 🤔. I mean, they're one of the biggest players in the tech world, so it's like, what's next? Is this just a test run to see how far China will push them? Or is this a permanent thing now? I don't know if you've been following this stuff, but it's like, really scary for the LGBTQ+ community in China. They're already living in a super restrictive environment, and now they're getting hit with this on top of everything else 🤕. It's like, how are people supposed to express themselves online when there's no freedom to do so? I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next 👀.

the news about apple removing those gay dating apps from china's app store is like a punch to the gut, you feel? it's like the government is saying 'you can't be yourself' and that's not okay 🤕 but at the same time, we gotta think about why this is happening - is it just cos of china's strict laws or is there more to it? maybe the apps were violating some secret rule that nobody knows about 🤔 or maybe its a test to see how far tech companies will go to comply with gov't pressure

anyway, as an app user, i feel like im losing something essential - the freedom to connect with others who might be feeling lonely or isolated because of their identity. thats what these apps were for, right? and now that they're gone, its hard not to wonder if we'll ever see them come back 🤞

man... this just breaks my heart 🤕 apple's decision to remove those gay dating apps from china's app store is a huge blow to the chinese lgbtq+ community, who already face so much persecution and oppression. it's like they're being forced to live in the shadows, unable to express themselves freely or connect with others like them. tech companies need to be more mindful of the impact their actions have on people's lives, especially when it comes to marginalized communities. 🙏

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one 🤯... Like, can't we just let people be themselves online too? I mean, what's next? Removing Facebook or Twitter from China just because the government doesn't like their views? 🚫 It's so frustrating when tech giants get caught in the middle. Apple should've just taken a stand against censorship and left the apps alone... but I guess that's not how it works in China 🤷‍♂️. The more I think about this, the more I'm worried about what's going to happen to these guys and their users in the future 😟.
